Hopefully. I think this is different than clownfish though. To my knowledge, most (all?) of the operations that produced large numbers of clownfish ended up shutting down because they were unable to make any money at the price point the fish go for.

If a large investment is necessary to produce yellow tangs (huge tanks), then the price point is going to have to rise drastically until it becomes profitable. Although I think there's always a market at the extreme high end, I'm not sure the price at which producing yellow tangs in bulk becomes profitable is low enough for most people to still be interested.

Our problem here in Hawaii is there are no funds to do extensive research. All the laws are based on people who sit in government hearing protests from people in the community. It's the you take care of me, I'll keep re-electing you clause. Sad, but true...

That is sad. How can you pass laws to fix a problem that you know nothing about?
Is there really a problem? What areas are most heavily effected by the problem? What's causing the problem? What can be done to fix it? Without the answers to these questions it's almost impossible to pass laws to correct the problem.

They will probably end up passing laws restricting our activities simply because we don't have the money that the big fishing industries have.

That has been our gripe here in Hawaii for a long time. This doesn't just apply to fish!

That is exactly what happened. A guy who owns a dive company here got mad at a fish collector and it turned into a pushing match at the harbor. Net thing you know he writes a bill to ban aquarium fishing. Must be nice to be friends with the Governor.

When you look at this site. Keep in mind the things that they say are unsubstantiated. some are flat out lies. At the hearing Snorkel Bob himself said we use billy clubs on the reef to get the fish.

It is a case of people who have no idea of how fish are collected, trying to make laws to control how fish are collected.
