i just got a new yellow tang for my 110 reef and when i was there i was talking to my fish guy and he told me that i was getting him at a prime time because collection of these beautiful fish has just been outlawed in Hawaii i paid 49.00 for mine from what i was told in the next few meeks to a couple of months the price is going to sky rocket to upwards of 300.00 for 1 it is a wonderfull thing that these fish are now so protected but if you like them as much as i do get them now just a thought

Yeah my LFS told me this 3 weeks ago, they have yellows that sell for $79 bucks,& he told me that they will be more soon.

I wouldn't worry about it. Company's will start breeding them, and eventually have mass quantities like Ocellaris clowns. Won't they? :worried:

Tangs breed in schools, in open water from what I understand thus making it very difficult to breed them.

Would have to do abit more research, but offhand thats what I recall.

Correct.

I dunno. We have tons of yellow tangs ready for export here in Hawaii. They were still 5.99/small 7.99/medium and 10.99/large yellow. I just picked one up about a week ago from coral fish hawaii.

The yellow tang law is not a yellow tang law.
The law is totally different than originally proposed and has a long way to go to become law.

Sorry VaderWS6 tangs are some of the hardest fish to breed, I believe because of their really long gestation period. If they were regulated to 5 per diver you would see about as many yellow tangs on the market as you do black tangs (assuming you don't see very many black tangs).

It would be nice if it were that easy to breed all saltwater fish. Even though it would put me out of business.

All this info might mean more if we knew how many were being collected now. Is it being reduced by half? 90%?

I thought the same, Ive been researching for ages trying to find out some numbers. But i presume that its ALOT because of the availability of yellow tangs. Maybe we will be able to breed them one day. When i hit the big one ill look into it :D

Protect species, that's the best thing humans can do to save them from extinction, yellow tangs are probably not in danger of extinction right now, but they will be if nothing is done.
That's actually a very good measure, as a hobbyist I'd like my children, grand children, great grand children, etc. to be able to see these and many other animals.
This is an already expensive hobbie, and by having these yellow tangs more expensive will force only a few people to have them, hopefully people who knows how to take care of them and not people who will let them die to buy more at the LFS.

I think situatations like this really underscore the need to setup systems/programs for the captive breeding of marine fish. In the long term, this is the only way to sustain the hobby.

I think our only option would be to build houses under water. We'd have the luxury of seeing different fish daily without ruining their habitat. Problem is, we'd be in the human tank and I don't think the fish care what OUR params are :)
