Yellow Watchman Goby Shyness?

Brought home our new Yellow Watchman Goby on Friday (along with a Randall's Pistol Shrimp-- haven't seen that critter since though!) and for two days he was MIA. Now we see he's found his spot and is visible during certain times of the day peaking his head out (seems to prefer the blue lights than the white). Anyway, I know they are a shy fish, but is this part of his acclimation to his new home (56 gallon currently with 2 false percula-- very friendly-- and clean up crew)? Will he always be hiding out? If so, I'm worried about him getting enough to eat.

I had some nori on a clip for the pencil urchin and after she'd finished most of it some of the small pieces were floating around the tank. He snatched some of those up when they floated by, which was good. And I added some frozen mysis yesterday but he never did pop out to get some.

I've read the books I have and the net on this particular Goby but I was just wondering what all of you thought. :fun4:

I have a 6" in my 220G.

he is very shy.

Have seen him eat pods and also snatches a snail or hermit from time to time,

wow! had no idea they'd eat the crabs, snails...

Anyway, so is it a strong likelihood that he's gonna be shy forever or might he eventually become more sociable over time?

it all depends on the fish. mine started out like that for a good couple weeks, he would only peek his head out i never saw him eat, but i guess he got some food now and than, they can also hunt pods and sift sand so he can get lots of food on his own. mine after maybe 3-4months venture all over the tank when im gone, and will stay out of his burrow, but close to it when im in the room. its a big improvment in my eyes

THanks for the info, Colin. :-) I'm just gonna keep putting thawed mysis in every day since mine is a newer tank.... I'll just keep an eye on the nitrates with the extra food in there. But I know my clean up crew will get to it also. Bunch of piggies they are!

Mine is still shy after about 6 months in the tank. It will hide when someone is in front of the tank.

Mine is still very shy too after 3 months in the tank. I almost never see him eat, except when I feed him flake food. It's amazing, he never comes out for mysis, copepods or anything else, only the flakes, go figure... He is venturing out a lot more now then he was in the first few weeks after I added it.

I've had mine for over a year in a 120. Stays close to his burrow and is quick to hide with any activity. He will eat out of the turkey baster when I feed my anemone.
