Yellow Watchman Goby

I got one this weekend and the fish will not come out of a cave. I figured he was acting shy and checking out the environment but now I'm starting to worry. Would this be considered normal behavior?

Try digging a big hole under the rock in front of the tank and see what happens. This is what I did with mine when I had it and it worked. Mine was shy for two weeks.

Mine pretty much stays in or around his burrow all the time, except for feeding time. I don't mind because it's in front of the tank. He has paired up with my Jawfish and they never leave eachother side which I guess is odd for them to be buddies. I hear they pair up with pistol shrimp. I love the little foot they have to rest on.

How about getting a pistol shrimp and see if they will pair up? in that case, your goby will come out more often. I dunno what will be a good dither fish for your goby.

I have a female watchman with my tiger pistol shrimp. The goby is always out scouting for the shrimp for protection, Im sure if u get a pistol they would get together. I didn't buy them as a pair either.

I'm not crazy about the pistol shrimp idea. I've heard you can't hear them to you can hear them click at the other end of the house.

What type of food are you feeding that is bringing them out?

the pistol shrimp makes snapping noise, you can hear it but not that loud. It only makes noises if some other creatures come close to its caves or territory:)

You'll here it click, yes but its not all time. If thats what you're worried about I wouldn't let that stop you from getting one there fun to watch.

would you say it would be too loud for a bedroom? Both my tanks are in my bedroom and I'm sure my wife wouldn't be too pleased with a loud clicking shrimp.

everyone's noise tolerance is different, so i don't know what to tell ya. I would say the clicking noise is about the same as you flip the light switch:)

also, may i add, if she can stand the filter, overflow, water churning noises, why can't she stand a couple clicks once in a while? but don't quote me on that:strooper:

I cant imaginekeeping a watchman goby and not keep a pistol shrimp. IMO, it is one of the neatest things in the hobby being able to watch the relationship between the 2.

That is def. true ykh. I'm going to let her read what you said when she starts asking why I'm flipping the light switch on and off at 4:00am in the morning! :)

Please don't do that. Who knows I might have to stop by your place in the future and I'm sure that I don't want to get chased out by your wife:p
