So this summer, I felt like I would be a good boyfriend and build a 2.5 for my girlfriend. So here it is, my first DIY and her first saltwater tank.
The wood is ½ inch oak I believe. Why oak? because it was cheap in new York. I made the blueprint and cut everything out. With a little help from her dog Joe.
Here is everything cut out, eith Joe again.
This was supposed to be a building and bonding experience, and what was she doing.......
here is is put together. The top will lift up on a hinge.
And from the back. I left the back open for easy access. notice that there is room in the bottom for..... an ATO, and a 2" lip in the back to hide cords, pumps or whatever on the over side.
Primed on the outside with spray on Kilz and on the inside with the latex Kilz.
Scale reference
Finished product as it is today
The tank itself is a standard 2.5. the powerhead is a MJ400-- NO sand storm when running constantly, only when it was first started. The substrate is crushed shells and some LS from my 29g. Stock list is softies, mostly zoas and a kenya tree. There is an ATO (another recently finished DIY), with a tuberware stored in the bottom for top off. No skimmer or filter. regular water changes, low bioload and the LR and LS should help keep the skimmer out of the equation. The lights are a 18w CF or PC retrofit from hellolights. there is a moonlight for nighttime viewing. There is a small 50w heater.
