Yet another pest to worry about! A.E.S.

I havent added any corals to the tank so I decided to purchase some acro's through my LFS. I'm not sure if I should add the LFS I went to out here in San Diego.

Came home removed plugs, check for AEFW etc. remounted them.

Got out the Bayer to dip, 30ml in 2 cups of water, a bit on the soft side. after 10 minutes I threw them in to get a good rinse before adding to the display, 100$ worth of corals, I didnt want to loose so I decided I wasnt going to QT them.


I poured about 95% of the dip, and left the residue on bottom in the container, And I find a spider, Did a quick search and its an Acro eating spider, At this time not much information is out there for them.


Some say interceptor will kill them, But no hard evidence of people actually said it killed or not.

So off to the QT they went. So bummed my fish store has these. Now I am more paranoid about pest then ever!

Heres my little 10 gallon QT tank, Dipping once a week for 4 weeks will be good enough?

Most if not all LFS will have some sort of pest. It's just in the nature of the business. Apparently these are notorious on aussie shipments. GL with your QT.

I got these frags from a.s.d. good place.. But I will qt all corals from now on !

Not surprised. ASD imports such a large amount of coral there would be no way for their system to be clean. Still a good store in my books.

I have never seen these in Aus, where did you here this? its possible they are being overlooked, what damage do they do? are there any tell tale signs?

I havent heard any news about it being in Aus, They cause no P.E and STN on some area's of the coral, Im not sure if they lay eggs or not but during the day they're hiding in the rocks and feeding while the lights are out. so its basically similiar to AEFW?

They will only come out to feast during night hours like AEFW. What I know so far is revive/bayer does not kill them, apparently he left one in there for 24 hrs and still saw it moving around the next day. I've never personally had a run in with these pest.

From what I've heard, it's more common in aussie shipments due to the collection and storage methods of the aussie holding/growing facilities. Indo/Bali shipments are grown, harvested and shipped asap. Aussie shipments are collected and sometimes stored for months in their facilities which allow the pest populate.

This is all hearsay but my source imports a ton of coral so I'd trust him.

I dont know who fed u that crap but i dont know of any supplier who does or would want to hold onto stock for months lol

You forget that their storage facilities are not like our tank, it's just a big part of the ocean that they place their frags in. Are you telling me during the grow out period they cannot be "stored" for months?

we talkin frags or wild colonies, cause wild colonies no way! days at best, suppliers want to collect and ship as quick as they can I really don't know any suppliers here whos tanks can sustain color more than about a week. and as for frags there arent many commercial frag operations in Aus apart from us we are the largest and yes you are correct our stock is in grow out for weeks and months some colonies are a year or two old, we have come across nudis, the occasional flatworm some interesting looking bugs but NEVER seen spiders, im not saying they don't exist in aus im just questioning the accuracy of your information cause personally I call bull$$it...

and mariculture is illeagal on the east cost of aus so there are no wild farms on the great barrier reef there are a couple on the west coast but not in Australian waters
