That's where we are different. I worked for 3 1/2 years at a LFS, getting meager pay. Sure, perks like first pick, and wholesale meant alot, but I also liked sharing the information. Trust me, the pay was not worth the hassle, but some of us enjoy educating others, and also, protecting the hobby from bad purchases that could, someday, end up with restrictions on what we can keep / import. I'd rather be pro-active, and educate, than one day lose the ability to keep my tanks because the government imposed laws on it. Call it "Paying it forward", because I know I made a difference in many peoples education on SW tanks. THAT is the real motivation for me.

To be brutally honest, and at the expense of being called an idiot, a few years back I did some graphics work for John, some banners for potential sponsors, to give them some incentive to come on board. Ya know what I said? "No thanks John, put the money towards a server upgrade / new software".. I learned so much from RC, and saved so much money on my own systems, that I give my time freely here because I want this board to continue. If it educates others just 1/10 of how it educated me, well, I think its worth it to give back once in a while. Not everything is about money. Sometimes people do things for good causes.

Well I couldn't agree with that stated position more. I've actually been through some pretty similar experiences, and volunteered a considerable amount of time towards educating hobbyists. We (well, I guess I am) really are quibbling over very small differences about how that message is conveyed. I am more concerned with the protection of coral reefs than I am concerned about the protection of this hobby, quite frankly, and I think that's where we differ. It is my opinion that to preserve reefs and keep a sustainable hobby we need to do as much as we can to promote captively bred animals, coral and live rock aquaculture, fragging, and trading, and education of hobbyists to purchase fish and invertebrates that are sustainable and conscientously collected. In all honesty, I don't know if the majority of big box etailers and B&Ms share that vision. I feel feel that way because I see crinoids and nurse sharks for sale in their shops. I can't imagine an etailer or B&M being happy about the rise of coral frag swaps, for instance, because it cuts into their business. Now, I have heard more than one etailer say in no uncertain terms that RC is much more friendly and conducive to his business than a place like RDO. These are the things that concern me about this site.

Not my position to do that, it was removed for a reason. And if you wanted to address those accusations, perhaps an email to Race would have been better? Perhaps if the thread on RDO was left open, and an email sent to Race? There was absolutely NO reason to bring your issues to RC. If you want to dispute things about RDO with Race, do it ON RDO. RC is not the place for those discussions.

I think you either misunderstood that thread's history or haven't read it. An RC member started a thread regarding the whole RDO fiasco in the DFS forum here at RC. Race responded, and in his reponse made an accusation about RDO that we picked sides, which is simply not true. We provide a place for censorship free discussion, nothing more. That thread was locked before I got a chance to state this. I then started my own thread to address these accusations. I did not bring the issue over to RC, in my opinion, Race and that member did. If lies were stated about RC on RDO, I would expect you to address them just the same. And I wouldn't delete the thread and threaten you with a ban for doing so!

As I said above, money is not always the driving force. I think RC has one of the best volunteer forces running any BBS on the web these days, and I think that is because we are in it for the hobby, NOT the money. Sure, my wife (and I am sure many other staffers wives) would love to see us make money from RC, but ya know what? ITS NOT ABOUT MONEY to us. To us, its about having the information, the knowledge, the experience, and sharing that information to help make others better reefkeepers, and possibly do something that one day may save all of our collective butts from having to keep a FO, or worse, just a FW tank because the government imposed restrictions due to low numbers in the wild as a result of thousands of inexperienced hobbyists needlessly killing animals..

If John paid out of his own pocket for years to keep RC going (and I know he did, RC was in deficit for a very long time), I don't fault him for wanting to recover some of that investment. In fact, I encourage him to, because if he didn't do that, I wouldn't have this treasure-trove of information at my fingertips. For that I commend him. His selfless contribution to keep RC going has resulted in A LOT of people getting an education..

If you really feel that way, I think you ought to pick up a copy of some of the 'advice' given by your sponsors on how to keep a reef tank, and look at what types of animals some of them sell. They're doing nothing to help that vision in my opinion.

Just my 2 cents. Thanks for your thoughts.

Regards,
Matt

Where are the insults and attacks?

Don't worry Brian, it's just our "perception" that you're being hostile. :D

Honestly, I think you write like a lot of people on the internet--acutely aware that the people reading can do nothing to you or for you. That rubs some people the wrong way. If I had said some of the things you posted in this thread to somebody in person, I'd expect a punch in the nose. ;)

Matt, I am not going to respond, you can have the last word. You are more than welcome to follow up via PM.

Sheesh... I see three pages, and here I thought " Wow a lot of people will be affect by John closing 2 days." Boy I was wrong..lol

I wish the content of this thread that does not regard to Your Reef was posted somewhere else so more RC members could read.

Excellent response Matt.

wombat2, obviously you don't frequent the Vendor Experience forum, where criticism of sponsors is common. It is impossible to be in business and make everyone happy.

Of course, you obviously prefer to invent scenarios that don't exist in order to further your agenda. I think Anemone summarized your objectives quite well.

Hehe, this just struck me as funny because I recently read one of these state of the industry type articles from the good Doctors. Always enlightening to get the one-sided perspective of a businessman on the state of the industry:

http://www.drsfostersmith.com/pic/article.cfm?dept_id=0&siteid=6&acatid=476&aid=1164

Race has stated publicly that no industry type questions or threads will be allowed in his forum, and the staff happily obliges. The type that discuss, say, how LA drop-ships fish they never see before sending them to you. Or, say, a discussion of how exactly he can claim his fish are better than a retail store's fish. The thread has since been locked/deleted/moved, but the gist of what Race said was that all industry issues would be addressed via his newsletters and website. Boy, that's a great way to have a discussion without any criticism--you talk, we listen.

I suppose what BrianD was referring to when he said "criticism of sponsors is common" is that there are threads from unhappy customers. We all know there are bigger and more important issues regarding the ornamental fish industry at stake to discuss than "my fish arrived dead."

So, I ask you Brian, or any staff listening, can we discuss issues like this in Race's forum? He says his fish are better than retail stores' fish. Can I start a thread asking him why he believes this? Can I ask him why he feels B&Ms sell substandard fish compared to his? Can I ask him why he sells carnation corals and non-photosynthetic gorgonians, or why he sells port jackson's sharks as tropical?

Thats OK, I've never heard of neither before I did a google search and found an Urban Dictionary!:lmao:
