zoanthids mounted on a disc

if you have a zoa frag on a disc would you let it grow on the disc or remove it and place it on a rock? Any comments?

I leave mine on the disc until the disc is completely covered. Then I glue the disc to the rock.

I prefer pieces of rubble myself. Just be careful when you are gluin'---try not to get glue on the membrane of the zoas. You can put it right back in the water ASAP so that the glue will set.

Sorry to Hijacked this thread ...
I had a disc with Zoas with maybe 4-5 polyps, had it for at least 3 Months and I don't see any propagation. are these slow growers?
these are under (2) 250 10K MH...I still don't see anything growing.

I know everyone does it, but don't know if growing on flat level discs is the best way to get growth. Although I don't have as many zoos as some of you do, I usually arrange them in such a way on a piece of rubble that encourages them to grow upward or want to spread in a way to receive better/more light. Think about it... if its as good as its ever going to get... why try to do more? :P

i dont understand those discs, they look unnatural, and i too have noticed zoas dont spread as fast on them. why dont people just use rubble instead... is there something i am missing?

I like rubble all the way--but I think people choose discs because they may not want to break up their LR--maybe they don't have so much.

Supposedly the surface of the discs being aragonite (in some instances) encourages growth....

I have some zoas on a piece of rubble and it is completely covered now. How do I get them to start spreading out.

glue the piece of rubble to a larger rock?

I think people use frag discs because they are easier to organize on egg crate and cant easily get flipped over. Personally I think that a flat surface would be better for growth because it gets lit evenly so new polyps can spring up quicker. Also crevaces in the rubble can be an obstacle in the expansion process.

I'm not saying you don't get growth... but what gets more. I wish i had the facilities to do a direct comparison with 2 of the same frag. One on a disc and one on a piece of rubble strategically placed. I think its a worth while experiment for anyone that has the ability.

I think I may have made this argument before without people giving it much merit... I think I'll just shaddup now. :P

well I was actually thinking the same thing, about an experiment

I agree with placing the colony where it is touching a vertical surface. The best growth I have gotten is when I lean the branch or small rock against a large rock and the colony spreads upward.

Another thing I do with frag discs is put polyps on different sides of the discs. They usually grow towards each other at a pretty fast rate.

would you mind posting some pics of zoos that you have that started as frags on a disc?

Most of my zoa collection is on frag discs on the bottom of my reef and most of them are ovrgrown.

Most of my stuff came on pieces of rubble. My hermits liked to turn them upside down, and after a week of reaching in to turn them back over every day, I switched to frag discs with the post on the bottom so they are now anchored in the sandbed. I get the same growth on the discs, and personally kinda like the look of a frag grown out on a disc.
