Zoa's and Amphipods

wrasse

wrasse

Hey, I have a 12 gallon nanocube with some zoas frags and tons of copepods and a bunch of amphipods that i can see. Should I buy a sixline to take care of the amphipods? I don't want to lose my zoas.

after being one of those disbelievers......and now witnessing it for myself.....

I think the ones that do eat them vs the ones that just scavenge off of them are different. How else could it be explained that we could watch them do no damage for years and then all ofa sudden start eating them??

It would be interesting to see someone with the skills and means to prove or disprove that theory

just an update. I recently bought a nice size rock with palys... 1st day, opened up beautifully, 2nd day opened up beautifully with a couple polyps irritated, 3rd day, :( most heads are small with no fringes, checked them at night, some huge pods all over the rock. freshwater dip revealed 3 large amphipods.

I just got a yellow wrasse yesterday night, its a small one and I didn't see him picking on rocks yet. maybe today will be different. what can I do to try and save my new colony? there's a few polyps left that haven't been destroyed yet.

bumping this thread back alive....because as of this week i've noticed these large amphipods munching away on some of my zoas and mainly my monster lip palys. i actually observe them eating the skirts off..and tonight i saw one eat away the bottom of a zoas removing it from the rock and with it's leg held it and started to eat it. i am getting a wrasse tomorrow (hopefully the fish store will have some) and hopefully this will help.

I think this is the case as well... We use the classification of amphipods somewhat liberally... Its like saying that birds don't eat meat... While 90% of them don't... There are a few out there that do...

What would be interesting is if we could somehow identify which amphipods are doing the damage so that we could differentiate the zoanthid munchers from the beneficial clean up kind... :)

the ones i saw eating at my zoas/palys looks like this..which are supposely common..

soo i got a kinda particular problem.

i too have noticed these lil guys nippin at my zoos. they're responsible for the destruction of at least 1 colony, and seem to have touched a few more.

but i currently have a firefish, and a lil mantis in my reef.

im tenative to try a 6-line because i dont want him beatin up the fire fish.

is there, like a less aggressive wrasse that can co-habitate w/ a firfish?

That one should work for you fine... They aren't near as aggressive as sixlines, but are closely related...

word, thanks randy

see my fire fish is a total wuss. i had an epic battle gettin a damsel out w/ Doni's fish trap, all for him

is it a safe assumption, that since homeboy is a wrasse, he will still be a podinator like his cuz?

Yeah... That wrasse will dominate some pods... What size tank do you have though??? You may still have problems with it getting along with the Firefish if your tank is tiny...

its roughly an 18 gallon.

im debating even putting another poo-machine in there.

but if the poo is all pods, well....

G. just watch that wrasse.. 6line's and the same genre can quite be a handfull once fully established. mystery, dissapearing, 8 line, 4 line, 12line.. they're all the same to me.

Just go with a small yellow coris. 1 of the best workers and looks nice with the bright yellow in the tank.

My problem is I purchased a Spotted Mandarin for my 40Breeder, hes been doing great for 5months now.

However I was told (after the fact) that he wont eat the larger pods... and I would starve him out if I also added a wrasse, or coris.

Any comments on this?

i would think if you get a wrasse you rish starving your mandarin since they both eat the same food source.

i'm curious to know if a six line wrasse will eat the larger pods since it's mouth seems small.
