I just got a used MH bell pendant . The light needs to be changed but i thought i would run it anyway. It has only been running for 4 days about 7 hrs max a day, and i have noticed that some of my zoas have gone alot whiter. They are not sriveling up they and they look good other wise. Is this normal??
I had 3 t5s before now just 2 (1 actinic, 1 10k)

Tank specs
33g
MH 175w 10k
1 t5 actinic, 1 t5 10k
tank parameters are all good.
Salinity is at 1.025
2 damsels
2 clowns
1 6line
mostly zoas and some sps.

if it's mostly zoos you should go with 14k in my opinion, I have a 30 cube with a 250w 20k over it and they do great, any yellower than 14k will generally give some pretty bad results with zoos. Also, did you acclimate the corals to the light by slowly increasing the halide time, or just turn it on for 7 hours right off the bat? you may only need to run it for 6 hours for the same results, but if you didn't acclimate to the halides, I'd say to go with 3 hours to begin with, and hand the pendant a little higher than normal

OK thanks. I do plan on getting a new bulb soon. for day 1 and 2 The MH was on maybe 4hrs a day but then day 3 and 4 its off and on a few times a day. Right now the light is about 12" away from the top of the tank. I will move it up a bit.

Thanks for your help

ah, I think you upped the hours too quickly, I'd say get a nice 20k bulb and set it for 4 hours a day, then slowly, like a half hour each day max, raise the time that it's on, and you'll be amazed with the color ;)

until then I'd say give them no more than 2-3 hours a day, should be ok though, just be careful, 10k will burn those zoos up pretty easily

I would just try raising up the bell pendant, then slowly lowering it. They are simply adjusting to the halides. They penetrate a hell of a lot more than T5's , so it's just the zoos re-acclimating.

a quick question 10k will burn zoo's? are you talking about the spectrum on any type of light or just MH's

just personally, I had 10k 250w halides burn zoos, and I find that they typically like a higher spectrum than that from halides, the rest I don't know
