'07 Regional Club Frag Swap in Dixon- Guidelines & Bonus Round Consideration

Im by no means saying Im the speaker of the people and can only speak on behalf of my own flagrence ;) This horse will never die though, as long as their people who are obnoxious when setting the prices of rare corals. The age old supply and demand is soo true and will be the first to attest, but when the prices are skyrocketed before the demand can come into play>COUGH< >AUSSIE ACANS< >cough<, it's just blatant and quite a turn off or stain on the hobby in my eyes. Sorry bug in my throat ;) But some
corals are genuinly rare and sad but true there is just no way around the price as it is truly set by demand, not some dude in the back room scouring RC for the next trendy coral.

I think the silence is because most discussions of such get stifled by "supply and demand" which inadvertantly blanket all high marked corals whether the supply and demand ratio is accurate or not or simply "dont like it dont buy it", which obviously has no argument against, ultimately.

Now that I think more about this I could go on for days!lol. You mention clones. If it is a true clone, what makes it rare? Lineage..Even if it came from the same original colony in the wild sharing the same genetics, only later harvested, it becomes less rare?

Or the fact that it may have been distributed much earlier and has been slowly populating a small community in Montanna but Tyree thought he got the first batch that came in(which in reality was the second) and put his stamp of approval as an exotic coral worthy of distribution but has never been seen before. All the while going uncontested because this small mountain town in Montanna
who recieved the first distribution of this rare coral doesnt have internet and therefore can not contest such claims of original lineage....But, it could happen ;)

Also on the discussion of lineage, if two coral shipments from the same collected area get sent to two locals why does it become more expensive when it passes through a certain series of hands as opposed next?

To me there just is no absolute way of governing, therefore carries no legitimacy other than one person's word. Which in a perfect world should end there. But everyone falls on hard times, and people go through bad periods in there lives where scruples may not be a priority. How does one check? There are no papers, there are genetics, and it is not difficult at all to find out where a particular coral came from and the chain that followed under them. Then through all of this are you really going to do a background check and see if that person really did get it from Tubs, GCarol, Nathan, or Palletta, or there cousins friend's mother who does there hair and owns a nano in her shop?

No the spirit is not lost. The last regional swap I saw brotherhood and giving even amongst some obvious, I'll just say a coral hungry few. Big props to bluenasserius, dont mean to spotlight you but that was flat out cool. Place quite a few frags on the table unmarked, just so happen to be the most exotic stuff he had on his person at the time. Thought I'd end on a positive note, sorry for going on, Im not mad, defensive or irratated I swear! And I hope my comments dont harvest such feelings either.

I understand how you feel about the 'fads' in this hobby. I think I'm a poor choice for these rare consideration threads, because I avert my attention from the trends that come and go. I don't know an aussie from an indo acan. Heck, I couldn't tell you the difference between a PPE and a Gorrilla Nipple if it were pierced with a tassel and twirling in my face.

You know how I feel about lineage pieces, though, but I can accept that you don't see the same value in them that I do. Most would also say they could care less who it came from or what strain it is. No big deal.

I just like having the same exact pieces that have come from or have been chosen by those who can be considered pioneers in this hobby. Pieces that have remained exceptional through numerous variations of tank conditions. They develop a history. They develop specific care instructions that gets passed down to help ensure that the next person is successful at keeping it. I've said it many times before, and I'll say it again, this is well worth the extra dough to me. Takes out all the guesswork and greatly reduces the 'weeding out' process.

This approach guarantees that I'll never be one of those guys with the 'gifted eye' for finding a gem among a pile of brown outs, but that's cool. As long as the tank's doing well and more captive-raised collectibles come down the pipe, reef life for me is grand;)

A very respectable response and an ideology I can appreciate.

I like lineaged pieces too. Not necessarily the commercial ones, but also the ones that I can track back through the local reefers.

Btw... PPE clockwise, Gorilla Nips counter-clockwise :)

So do we need to pre-qualify for rares to get bonus tickets?

I have a couple that are mentioned that I would be willing to frag, AoGs that I know came from Norman, unless someone else named Mr Ugly was floating around the clubs a couple years ago. Ponape Birdsnest (Seriously? I mean I have it, how rare can it be ;)). Other than that though I don't have any rarely named corals just stuff I've given out that people like (Pam's got a couple :D) .. oh well the Mike's Underoos Favia is my named piece ;)

I really hope I can make this swap, I might just toss in a a couple dozen additional frags as well.. just need to find the time to frag the stuff up.

Unarce,

Might I suggest that you consult with FunGuy. He's one of the elite collectors and probably the biggest polyp/zoa expert I know.

Thanks for the tip, but I have sources that I can actually trust.

I have a quick question regarding Zoanthids and Palythoas.
For more common color morphs (radioactive dragon eyes, blowpops, Oakland A''s, etc...)

How many polyps per frag would be a good general rule? These are the 'nicer' of the common types of Zoanthids out there, and I have a billion of them so I figured I would take the time to make a ton of frags and bring a whole lot of them.

This is going to be my first frag swap and I just want to make sure I am bringing appropriate sized frags for the event.

For general entry, I would believe that someone would be happy with at least 10-20 polyps. I know I loved frags about that size when I first was starting out. You could always make a frag pack and donate them to the raffle as well.

I was actually debateing taking like 5 to 10 polyps of each zoa I have and making a frag back to put in, but not sure if I should do that or put them in individually... only talking about 6 type or so.

Twisted - 5 - 10 polyps would be fine if they are cut ahead of time and reattached to a plug or rock rubble in order to heal - Go ahead and put as many as you can in individually that way your generousity is spread around.

I'm not a fan of drama, either, but it's very hypocritical of you to say that after your first post in this thread.

I can justify my comment to FunGuy because I had warned him never to contact me, ever. Yet he still chose to respond to my thread. You probably want to PM him first before deciding to get into this with me. I'm just appalled that he'd consider attending this event after refusing to hold raffle items for it.

Is Tyree toadstool considered rare?

I would say no, but it would be a nice addition to the swap.

Thread was getting too long to see if this has been asked but how-bout duncans? Rare or not?
I have some nice ones I could frag up (Two colors) That's about the only thing I have that's rare and that I could consider fragging at the moment..

LMK if you need pics..
