1.5' Red Carpet

So, I have just finished setting up my 675, and a Local reefer calls me and says he has a 1.5' red carpet nem for $325. I am the only one in the city that has the tank space and the expertise to take such an awesome specimen (or at least that I know) however, my big tank is not stable yet. I hate to pass up the chance and watch someone else in town take it and kill it however; my tank just is not there yet. Everything is 0 0 0 but it has not see real load yet. Should I take it? I could keep it in there by itself for a month or two which would put almost no load on 800 gallons of water or I could pass. What should I do? :(:(:( DSCF0733-1.jpg

Any chance he could hold it for a month while everything stabilizes more? Maybe toss a few SW mollies in there to put some bioload in the tank?

nope!!!!!!!

nope!!!!!!!

I surely would not put that animal in your tank....you probably deep inside
know you are likely condemming it to death if you do that....

Your tank is definitely not ready.

Ask him to hold it for 3 months.....pay him 1/2 now and 1/2 on delivery.

Or finddddddddd another reefer near you that cannnnnnnnnn hold it and
pay him a few bucks to keep in his tank etc if possible etc...but unlikely.....

Safer move have seller hold.

as a new tank cycle, it will have ammonia spike and it is extremely risky for the carpet.

wow that is one very tough call. i wouldn't know what to do either if i were you.... i have been keeping carpets for app 15 years but never tried it in a tank that is less than 1 year old. youcould perhaps pay him 50% deposite on the carpet to show good faith and have him hold it for a few months for you. i don think 1 month is good as the sand bed needs time to mature....... but then again i am no expert. sometime you go with what your gut tells you. if successfull, that carpet would be ideal for your tank and will be an awesome showpiece.

You don't have any stable tanks it could go in? Gah, that's such a tough call. Is he breaking down his tank or something? If he can hold it with a depostit from you, that would be ideal.

can give him to an experience reefer to put in his frag tank for a time but the dang thing is as big as the tank ie if its being burned it cannot move or if its unhappy it cannot do anything. Also, this would mean one more move, one more salinity change and one more shock to the animal. The seller is going to hold it for a lease a week so that its health can be certified which in that time I could see if the tank is even going to see a cycle, with that much water and Microbactor7, I doubt 10 green Chromises are going to spike anything. If it does see any kind of spike, I am not doing it. If the temp is a problem, I am not doing it.
My greatest fear is that someone who doesn’t know what it takes to keep these guys alive buys it and kills it, but I don’t what that guy to be me either.

I guess the only other tough decision that I will have is what really sweet pair of clowns will I have to get to host in it if I get it. HAHAHAHA

Atleast you aren't dealing with a red s. Gigantea. Not only would that be hard to pass up but it would be tough to keep. That's a beautiful red haddoni but I would tell the guy to hold it. Give him a deposit or something.

I have decided to let an experienced reefer put him in his frag tank. The only issue is that it is small ie the nem will not be able to move and its bare bottom. Should I add a pick of rock in there hoping he attaches? I am going to watch for bleaching like a hawk. What else?

I would say get a Tupperware container or something large enough to accomodate the foot of the anemone and fill it with sand. Then place the anemone in the container so it can bury it's foot. If a haddoni isn't able to bury it's foot it will usually cause a lot of stress to the anemone. I have seen people do this before in similar situations and it usually works out just fine.

Not to be critical but have you actually seen this nem for sale. In that picture it looks like a brown nem and even though it is 1.5' that seems like a pretty high price here is a pic of a nice red nem. Good luck in your dissicision

Thanks. I will do that. The next question is: what pair of clowns to get? Money is not an issue, but I want something striking and something that will run off any fish that might decided to become nem food. I am thinking Naked blacks or onyx true percs or picassos

It doesn't look brown at all.. looks like a pic taken with flash of a red nem.

:lmao:So I decided to have the owner of the nem drop it off with my buddy with a really nice frag tank. Before I could even get there with my bowl of sand, the nem had already put his foot down and was fully opened up. As of yesterday morning, it mouth was fully closed and it looked great. Last night, against my better judgment, my buddy feed it a large piece of shrimp which it took quickly so I think that its going to be ok even though I don't think that its acclimation program was run as well as it should have been.
As far as the color goes, its very very red, almost as nice as the one in the previous pic, I'm just not exactly Ansell Adams. I have never really taken pics of my tanks in the past, so I am going to need to read up on the photography page, I guess unless anyone else has some better places to learn how to take decent tank pics.
I still need more good ideas on the clowns. I have only had blue and green carpets in the past, nothing as nice as this so I don't want to junk it up with some budget clowns.

i was at a wholesaler today and they had a red nem that just sold for $250, half that size...at a wholesaler. your getting a good price

You dont know someone who could get a show size single or pair of Emp Angels? I have a shark/ angel tank that I have been trying to get good quality fish for but cannot because no one around hear has anything worth its salt.

I am still trying to find a pair of clowns for my new carpet. Should I try to find a pair of wild caught fish? My nem has eaten two yellow tangs already, i need something to keep these stupid fish away.
