On to the next stage of pairing #3 and #4. Wish me luck!

They look great--best of luck! Let's hope they're inspired to start making like Pepe Le Pew now that it's spring (but let's also hope that the males are more successful than poor hapless Pepe). ;)

Congratulations! you have inadvertantly just named my male. I was looking for a name starting with the letter "P."
So, Now it's Penelope and Pedro as the established pair and Pandora and Pepe as the hopefuls.

So far, the pairing process has not been too terribly rough but I'm less tolerant about letting a thiellei clown getting injuries than I would be a common ocellaris or clarkii as it's kind of a bigger deal to replace him if he gets an infection. Because they're in the dingy basement I simply don't want to be down there all bloody day. I'm planning to put them together for a few hours at a time until I decide it's safe... or that it's just not going to work.
There was a difference between Saturday's interactions and Sunday's interactions in that Saturday was a lot more aggressive and (what I hope will be) the male was less retaliatory on Sunday.
He was fighting back a little on Saturday. Not on Sunday. He was not doing any 45 degree twitching Saturday. He was twitching on Sunday fairly consistently. I expected this level of difficulty as this is an extremely intolerant and aggressive female. I would venture to say on the order of a marroon female. As such, I'm using a similar "role reversal" method to that that Matt P. used during the pairing of the "Lightning Marroon."

I'm not surprised the pairing process has been so tricky. My late, lamented female nigripes was one of the most aggressively territorial fish I've ever kept. She even went after fangblennies--even my former female clarkii never bothered with them.

I actually am a little surprised in terms of the species. The other two were a breeze to pair. That female has the temperment of an ocellaris. This female is something else. This one has the temperment of a skunk... or worse.

Looking good Walt.

Quick question for you. How do you keep the slanted tile from being knocked over? Is that a bead of silicone on the bottom tile?

Do you have problems with the fish knocking the tile over? My clarkii pair (pretty sure it's the female) will push the slanted tile over. She'll even do it when there are eggs on the underside of the tile. I put a small rock in the way of the tile, and she'll just move the rock first, then knock the tile over!

After hearing from an experienced breeder that his female was crushed to death by a tile while someone was cleaning the tank I decided to take no chances and siliconed all three edges. I figure the triangle can be rotated in any direction to accomodate aeration.
The long term plan is to lean an individual tile against a standpipe, but I'm yet to build the new rack system (lazy.)

I know all about laziness. I've been meaning to add 5 more tanks to my breeding system, but haven't got around to doing it. It's been almost 6 months now.

In the end, this didn't work out. I have since paired the two thielleis with A. ocellaris. My original two A. thielleis remain together and are quite large. They are similar in size percentage as mature ocellaris pairs. Skunks usually have a much larger difference between the male and female. Not the case here, though they were much much smaller when I first acquired them a few years ago.

Have a soft spot for Thielleis - I remember when Mike Thielle first discovered them in otherwise innocuous shipment of clowns.

I started reefing in 1997. I bought Drs. Fautin and Allen's field guide and fell in love with the skunk hybrids. I assumed thiellei and leucokranos would be impossible to obtain. I have since owned 4 thielleis and 7 leucokranos (3 captive raised.) Then we were told both were believed to be hybrids and many assumed that "hybrid" meant they would not be able to reproduce. We were wrong about leucokranos.

In the last 16 years I have been wrong a number of times in this hobby. In some cases, it has been a great pleasure.
