10 'most rare' SPS corals for a Tank

Just wondering what the top 10 most rare SPS corals are. I am setting up a 400 gallon and wanted to include them to my collection.

Thanks!

Rare doesn't equal beautie. I somehow doubt that you'll find a hard top ten list. Corals rare in the states may be very common in other areas.

I guess that would depend on your definition of rare. There are hundreds of corals that are not common if even available to the hobby. I'm guessing you mean available corals that are hard to find.

I would say-
tyree red dragon acro
Ice Fire Echinata
tyree purple monster
$500 efflo
********** red robin acro
Tierra de fuego
ultimate's rainbow acro
Rommel's Watermelon
Tyree Blue Matrix
uww sunburst monti

I know rare doesn't really describe really because there are lots. I mean corals that are beautiful and hard to come by.

Also, does anyone know of a place to buy these corals? my LFS just has regular SPS frags nothing really eye popping

like everyone has stated, very subjective on what is deemed "rare".

something like this is simply unobtainable by means of location.

im sure it wouldnt be overly impressive in your tank, but nontheless 'rare'.
you have alot of marketing ploys like LE this and that.

i would load up on a nice pack from ORA like joe the coral, etc. when you grow them larger, these frag readily.

Good luck finding any of the suggested named frags at your Canadian LFS.

If you are looking for unique corals checkout Reef Raft talk to Jay his got some stuff that you don't always see.

The other way is acquire the unique corals for local reefers..... there are lot's of local reefer in TO that have unique coral collection that you might be looking for.....

Its hard to find them at the stores here. The ones that do come up occasionally are ridiculous in price.

I was thinking about applying for a CITES permit so I could place and order from the US and bring corals back. Anyone have experience with this?

most of those corals that have been listed typically are only available as frags.....

I can tell you that all the SPS that I have with "name" have been acquired as frags mostly from local reefer and a few from LFS....

I know very few come around at the stores.

Anyone has any experience on the process of applying for a CITES permit?

ATL Red Polyp Clathrata, very hard to come by, extremely slow grower, really a stunning piece, rarely see one that is 'grown out'.

Red dragon rare? I think not, super-fast grower, you're already seeing colonies on a regular basis.

I know you'd like to have rare corals, but I'd suggest getting corals that YOU like the most. I've always wanted to get rare corals and I've spend some serious loot obtaining some, but some of my favorite SPS pieces are the cheapest ones in my tank.

The CITES paper work for almost all aquarium cultured corals in the states (ie.ORA, TYREE and anything else) is long gone.....no one can legally import these corals. Of course there are work arounds for people who want to stretch things....

I thought 'Joe the coral' was an actual person hahaha.
I believe Joe is the name of a guy working at ORA....I could be wrong.

I agree, and I'm not one to buy simply because something is expensive but I have seen of the harder to come buy SPS corals and they are simply beautiful. I was just wondering where you can buy them from thats all.
