1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

LED lights run at about 40%.

So I'm going to monitor the temp with the Uv off for a few days. Then I'll look to moving my return pumps out of the water. They are 240 watt Royal exclusiv pumps that I run about 110 watts each.

I also have 4 other smaller pumps. 2 for the skimmer and 2 for the media reactors. Media reactor pumps run at 20 watts. There is an issue with my reactors that if I crank up the power the lid pops off. RE is aware and the reactors will be replaced eventually.

The room is air conditioned and the house is air conditioned. It has to be the pumps and uv that is heating my water.

Time for detective work to see the impact of each component before installing the chiller.

ya im guessing all the equipment. Before you do to much though it might help to get a cheap thermometer (something that can check water temp) and just see what the temp is in the display. Even if the temp probe is calibrate it is possible it is faulty. They make cheap thermometer probes that would at least confirm the water is hot and apex is working. Just saying before you go and do a bunch of stuff or buy stuff.

also did you say your temp probe is in sump or display??? If its in sump with all the equipment its possible the temp in the sump is higher than the display. I wouldn't think by a lot but could vary.

All equipment is in sump. I don't have any Alex stuff setup at the tank due to distance.

Yeah- I'm gonna start ruling out equipment prior to chiller.

Love this hobby! So much fun sometimes. :p

Water doesn't feel warm. I think I'll try pulling the return pumps out of the sump first and see if that makes a difference. I'll keep track of the water temp and keep you guys updated.

buy a $3.00 glass temperature gauge to back up the Alex readings (couldn't help myself)
My return pump is outside the sump.

I have one. Will double check the Alex. :)

Temp is stable at 83.3 right now after turning off uv. I figure I can get it to 81 by moving the pumps out of the sump.

Then the problem is what happens In the winter. Heater time I guess.

I'd look at putting some cheap fans in your hood. I can't recall what your design looks like up there, but putting some fans pointing down from the canopy may help. Which area do you think runs hotter, the garage room or DT?

I have heard from some serious reef peeps that evap cooling via fans blowing across top of tank is very effective .... Not tried it yet....

Or I could buy a chiller and have it be a lot more predictable. Any opinions on he jbj?

If I were to buy a chiller, it would be JBJ, but the fan is extremely predictable because the Apex makes it so. I'm only seeing a few tenths of a degree variation.

The science experiment has begun. Right now in evaluating the effects of the uv on my water temp. With te uv off, temp as stable at 83.2 degrees. I ran the uv all night and it appears that the temp with the uv on went up to 83.7, about 1/2 a degree. Going to do this a few more days and establish a baseline for what te uv does to my tank temp.

After establishing the baseline, I'll play around with the lights. I have 6 radions that max out at about 45%. They go on at 2 with a 90 minute moonlight period and go off at 9 with the same moonlight period. It's the standard reef color spectrum that comes with the lights.

After that- I'll move the return pumps outside the sump- can likely get another 2 degrees to go down.

I appreciate the advice of the fans from everyone. It appears that in my frustration to get the temp down, I dismissed them too quickly. I can probably avoid the chiller and likely expenses associated with it after all.

Will keep everyone updated.

Assume all heaters on apex control. As we all know those thermostats fail all too often. I would keep eye on Apex heater history on/off logs too...

I don't have a heater on the tank....yet.

Frankly this is the first time I'm getting accurate temp readings on my tank. I think the little glass temp probe in my tank was not accurate. Regardless I'm going to track everything and see what the different variables do to the water temp.

I'll post graphs.

Just to be clear- the fish are fine but the corals are just not thriving like I thought they would.
