1000 Gallon Build- Here we go- Lots of Pictures

Do you need to vent it to the outside? Noise is not an issue. Sump room is in the garage.

My dt vs sump temp difference is .2 during full light cycle. Thus, I can chill sump temp and my Dt follows. You have a lot more going on with distance, and equipment. Good luck with the measurements. I'd hold off on equipment to cool until you can validate where the cooling needs to occur.

Thanks for all the feedback on fans guys. Will be waiting s week or so before changing anything. Just doing some data gathering right now.

On another note- anyone have a good link to what all the charts and graphs on Apex are? I mean, I know what they are but would like to learn more about the different probes and readings and how to interpret.

I'd say to give Kalkwasser a chance and see if it keeps up with your tanks Alk & Calcium needs. If it doesn't, you can then explore the other options like 2 part or a calcium reactor.

If you decide to go with adding Kalkwasser to your top off water, you might want to consider adding a piece of hardware like the Tunze 5074. Kalkwasser infused top off water significantly shortens the life of any pump moving it out of the storage tank. You can put something like the Tunze 5074 inline between the RO top off and the sump and extend the life of your top off pump. It's basically just a container that you fill with a Kalkwasser paste and the top off water moves through it on it's way to the sump.

Kalk inline with your top off line is a good way to start. I'm a fan of the Geo Kalk reactors. Mine has run with no issues for close to a decade. I like them better than the tunze design above because they come with an integrated maxi jet for stirring. I put it on a timer for 1 minute once a day. Geo also makes some pretty fine calcium reactors too.

I don't use a pump for top off. It is a direct feed from my RO system actuated by a float switch in my sump. So no worries about burning out a pump with Kalk.

I'd guess that given the size of your tank that eventually you will need a calcium reactor, but a Kalk reactor might do just fine for you for a long time. It all depends how fast you add calcium hungry corals.

Btw- for all those that kept on suggesting apex- you wer right. I was wrong. It's da bomb.

Pipes are about 3 feet underground so I doubt it's the ground heat but it's possible. Right now the fish room is at 64 degrees. I've been out of town for a few days but I'll monitor everything and see what I can do to get the temp down.

I had some lids on the sump and the tank that were there from the beginning. All are gone.

With the apex now installed I can properly monitor the temp and make adjustments. Frankly I've been running blind. Yes I know - I should have gotten the apex a long time ago. Don't rub it in.

I wasn't one of the ones pushing the Apex on you, but I knew your build would benefit from it since it is so complex and intricate. I kept asking myself why you wouldn't invest in it, because frankly, I knew the financial aspect of it wasn't the concern, so wasn't sure what was holding you back.

Honestly- it was just he hassle of installing and having to learn a whole new system. I found someone locally who did the install. Glad I did- he ran into a bunch of firmware issues that took forever to resolve. Glad it wasn't me dealing with it. Now I just need to learn a bit more about it.

If it helps, and if you aren't aware, I have cruised the Apex-Neptune forums and those guys seem very hands on and very knowledgeable about this product. Venture over there and see if you can learn a thing or two more about the system as a whole.

Good luck with the cooling issue. I have discus and they can tolerate high heat. However, we have been getting in to the 110F outside and my temp is trying to get in to the 86F range which I am not that thrilled about. They can take temps up to 92F for a very short time, but still, you worry about these things...

Fans over water is easier and cheaper than chiller imho. I'm cooling almost 1600 tsv of water with some fans and a mini split temps stable at 78. This is in Dallas heat.

Chiller must be outside, it will pump all that heat into the room. Chillers are sized according to demand. I have an outside chiller that looks like an air conditioner.

I had mine sitting on a shelf in a closet for three years because of that. I finally got it installed over the weekend. Once you get it up and running it's pretty easy.

I just have an Apex JR. I use the breakout box with an PM 1 add on box. Auto water changes and dosing. And, now water mixing between DT and Acclimation tank. I'm will not be medicating fish. That's what our lfs does. I don't purchase fish unless already medicated and eating. Programming takes a bit to get used to. Sequence of events is important and reverse logic thinking has to be employed due to the operation is dependent on last state of register being controlled. Lots of examples in the comprehensive manual and Neptune technical support is good.

I use a JBJ chiller in my non-a/c storeroom. It works great and I don't feel the extra heat. The cooling fan over the Acclimation tank makes the room super humid. Getting a dehumidifier. Once water is cycled with the DT, maybe I can ditch the fan.

By the way, amazing thread. Discovered it this weekend. Read the whole thing (well, maybe skimmed other comments - mostly I was looking for pictures!).

What a house! Awesome tank!

I've been dying to know what an ATM tank costs. I've actually posed questions about it on this forum before:
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2485362

I know budget was no option, and the receipts are probably in a drawer somewhere. I also know ATM didn't do the plumbing. But what did the tank/stand cost?

Thanks. I got all excited when I saw the "Socal" part of your screen name. I grew up in Yorba Linda and visit the folks frequently. My hope was that you did "private tours"...

I don't make it down to AZ very often.

I've had a few people over but really haven't given tours per say. Funny thing happened- we just got an offer on our house. No it's not for sale. A realtor knocked on the door and said he has a buyer and for me to name my price. I told him house is not for sale but at a certain price everything is for sale.

Gave him a number, he presented to his buyer and they made an offer very close to my asking price

So therein lies the dilema- do I sell at at a higher than market price or just sit tight. If we sell, we would likely build again as I have some property in the neighborhood that we could build on but the lot is not as nice and the plans we have on it are for a smaller home, not as many bells and whistles and most important, I have not specced out for a fish tank or fish room in the new place.

Totally unexpected this came up so the missus and I have to sit and discuss what to do. It's not a small chunk of change to turn down the offer but we are in our dream home so .....anyways....first world problems.

Think about how much you have learned about reefing in such a short time...then apply this new found wisdom (grasshopper) to a new build in a new house.Hey, I have built 5 homes so far.Sounds like you have also done this before ....so you know the journey and not necessarily the destination is where the fun is.GO FOR IT!

If you end up installing a chiller, go with a titanium rod and normal outside ac unit. Cheaper and way more effective. I have similar outside temp and during the day inside the house it easily gets warmer than 81f. I used to have a massive chiller before moving to the titanium coil way, half the energy consumption and way more precise controlling it via the apex.
