10k or 20k, that is the question.

Im looking at adding a Metal Halide system to my new 120 reeftank. Should I use the 20k or 10k? Ive seen the 10k corallife fixtures, but the water seems to be too purpley. I like the blue look u get from the 20k bulbs. Ive always loved the "under the sea look." This is acquired by using 20k bulbs right? And also, will I need actinics to accompany the 20k's? I found a coral life setup with 2 175 watt MH's, and 2 96 watt pc actinics. The halide bulbs are xm brand. Does the brand of bulbs really matter? Thanks in advance for any help you may have.

Why not just split it down the middle and go with 14K lighting. Not to white, not to blue. Actinic lighting is always a plus but is not necessary, but I would still use it. Never can have enough light! Some say the brand matters with that "get what you pay for" saying. XM is a good brand with many happy reefers. I prefer Hamilton but that's just me.

Thanks for the advice. How much blue would a 20k produce? I am wanting my tank to look like its underwater, but still have the shimmering effect.

Scroll down about half way and the pics in the first column are just MH and the pics to the right are with VHO suplementation.

Interesting. I think I do like the 14K better than the 20k. Unfortunately, the corallife only comes with the 10k or 20k.
