12 hr Clownfish Larvae

To tell you the truth Joe, I'm not sure. I'm pretty much following Joyce Wilkerson's book to a T...except for a few minor changes of my own from other reading and advice here. I'm not that far in the book drilling it into my head (I'll reference it for you later, just don't have it near me). It won't be until well after metamorphosis, they still are so tiny I wouldn't want to expose them to getting stuck in a sponge yet. I have a small piece of live rock rubble in already...I may just add more as they grow.

Day 9 - They started eating ground up flake food today (ground in the coffee bean grinder...lady of the house LOVED that idea). No other major info, just much more orange coloration and all have white head band.

I started feeding my clowns golden pearls (100-200 microns) at day four and they have done well. and good job.

Day 11 all but in the books, everything is going pretty good but I am having dismal results decapsulating and hatching brine shrimp. I'm not doing anything I haven't done before, but I am just not getting good numbers of them hatching.

I didn't think of the golden pearls, I may need to pick that up this weekend.

I recently purchased a bottle of the decapsulated brine shrimp from SeaHorseSource.com and I'm very pleased with the results. I previously used the regular brine shrimp eggs but always had a little bit of a mess with the egg shells. With the decapsulated, no more problems. My hatch in about 18 hours at 1.025 sg at 78 degrees. I think it's definitely worth the extra money to buy them already decapsulated. Saves alot of time and effort. And with all we're doing with the other chores with raising fry, any little extra break is appreciated!

You can get golden perals at brineshrimp direct.
I never have any luck decapsulating my own brine shrimp half as many hatch as there should be. I'm buying mine from seahorsesource.com and I love them no mess and hatch great every time. The extra $10 dollars you spend is nothing.
How many baby clowns do you have left alive?

After their diet of brine shrimp, I start them on the Otohime food that you can also buy at seahorsedirect.com You can buy a starter kit that has several different size foods that you can feed the fry as they grow.

barbara for some reason that website dosent work?

I have about 50 left and am expecting them to spawn today.

Don't worry Joe, the ??? are a perfect answer to my question because I am no longer going to bother doing it. Decapsulating is when you take a bleach solution and soak the brine eggs until they turn orange. This sterilizes them and removes the outer shell which can be dangerous if they find their way into the larvae tank (larvae can eat and choke or obstruct gut). I also found though that I had my specific gravity too low, I've got it back up to 1.025.

Those brine shrimp dishes have been around forever, my Mom used to have one :D

They do work well, but only handle hatching out small amounts of shrimp.
