120 build started!

thanks for the sentiment. I'm pretty bummed about it. I struggle with reds and had a bad feeling. I should have followed my gut and waited for my wife to get home. Hopefully the red doesn't pitch it orange. I'm actually a fan of orange, just not so much with furniture.

Nice Work! It looks like a 2in1 stain sealer? the right angle grains are a neat touch.

yes, it's a 2-in-1. I read a lot of bad things about them, but they seem to work for me. I was extra delicate with the brush to ensure consistency. I couldn't see any brush marks which was nice - just not feeling the color. I put some on a test piece. tomorrow I'm going to put some red over it and see if we can get the dark color we were looking for (more or less)

Blurry, hate to say this but just as a headsup.
If its a 2 in one you mean stain and poly combined? If so, if left to dry It will be much more work to apply any secondary coat because of the poly acts as a sealer. If its still sticky -ish or wet you can use mineral spirits and rag to disolve the poly It'll make it much easier to apply another coat.If its dry you will have to sand it.

Thanks for the tips. I thought about the mineral spirits, I was afraid to create inconsistencies. I'll probably surface sand everything and go with the red. if it doesn't look right start all over and call it a lesson learned.

maybe I should stay away for the 2-in-1 stains :)

Ok, I understand but just as general info: when you buy paint, straight poly,or stain thinners are used in the process to make gloss to semi gloss more thinners to make satin -matte to eggshell ect...

The mineral spirits wont do any harm or give you inconsistent results it will just break down the poly but only when wet.You can use a mason jar pour some of you 2 in 1 and add mineral spirits @ 3 to 1mineral spirt it'll make life alot easier. This is if your doing more than one coat though. If your doing one coat or on you final coat use the stain poly straight with no thinner added.
Wish you the best with what ever you decide, just passing along some thoughts.

That is an eye opening post! Am I reading correctly that you are suggesting mixing the correct color 2-1 (red) 3 parts to 1 part mineral spirits for the first coat? that is a really neat idea. Can i do this tomorrow when everything is dry?

Or should I be rubbing the stand down with mineral spirits right now? the stand is drying, but still has a hint of wet feel to it...

thanks for the help! You are raising my spirits a little bit :)

The issue appears to be the sealer which is part of the 2 in 1. I'll be experimenting with sanding and stripping when I get home!

There are no doors, the whole front is magnetically attached. The panels for the front will be 1/4" - they still need to be cut. Along the bottom of thetop edge is a groove for the panels to slip into.

My sump is in the basement so theoretically I shouldn't be under the tank much. Handles are more convenient, however we didn't like the look so magnets it is!

I consulted with a friends dad who is a woodworker by trait. After getting cussed out for using 2-in-1 he confirmed what graves suggested which is a light 220 sand followed by regular stain (repeat as needed with correct color) and a water based poly so that there is no yellowing.

Hopefully this will turn things around!

New staining is coming along well, having a hard time keeping consistency between the panels.

New goodie added today! Bubble Magus posing pump! see the review here: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?p=17037576#post17037576

seconds coat of stain is on and things are looking good. Only thing i have learned from all this is what i already knew - I don't know how to stain! I'll have to take some time this summer and learn how to stain.

all around the stand looks great and is very even in color. 24 hours and on goes the poly!
