125 Gallon Upgrade

So should I still get 4 1" slip/slip or 2 slip/slip and 2 thread/slip? And if I do need threaded, is the thread on the glass side or wet side?

You can go either way. I would just do s/s. Get the gate valve threaded. This way you can always remove the gate valve if you have a problem.

I ordered 2 s/s and 2 s/t - I don't think it will make a huge deal but being able to clean out the return pipe should be easier with a threaded connection.

I also bought a jigsaw, figured I would need it again (hopefully.) I finished painting the outside of the stand, still have to do the doors and inside. Hope to get the tank outside this weekend so I clean it. Once clean I will put it on the stand and start working on the plumbing. Only issue I have now is getting the old bulkheads off, 2 of them are glued in and I can't get them off.

The goal is to get the tank wet this weekend, not sure if that is going to happen...

Finally cut out the return/drain holes in my stand with a 3" hole saw.

Also managed to get all the old bulkheads off, one of them was actually cracked, which explains the excessive salt creep on the underside of the tank...no cracks, chips, or runs anywhere. Gave the tank a good vinegar scrub - glass is in very good condition, just hope the seals hold up!

Thanks for the link, glad I went with slip thread for the return.

I was planning on hard plumbing the return lines but have seen mixed rationale for using flex PVC instead...any major effects on the system if using hard vs flex for return?

I decided to go with the standard setup - 2 drain and 2 return.

So if all bulkheads are drains, where is my return line, over the top?

you can put it over the top or drill the back glass and itll come out the top of the overflow
Here's my 40b as an example

Only pic I got right now I'll post a couple more when I get home

Return will be over the top. Herbie best drain setup. You can not hear a thing when they are running. I am running 3000 gph and it's 10 times quieter than my durso pipe that I was running before

Thanks guys...I still haven't made up my mind yet on the plumbing, may go with Herbie.

But for now here is my new tank finally on the stand! Painted the back with a gloss black latex paint, also reinforced the stand with some 2x2 braces

Was bored and decided to see what a hard plumbed PVC setup would look like, it looks much cleaner than flexible PVC or vinyl...I may end up sticking with this setup, just afraid that it will be loud.

I've never had a tank other than what I have, but most on here must recommend a herbie or bean so fervently for a reason I imagine. I went with herbie and it's darn quiet. At first it was making horrendous noise. The added safety factor is nice as well. Plumbing looks nice and clean though. Coming along nicely;)

I'm going to go with the Herbie. Only issue is that my sump is hard plumbed to accept both main drains on the same side...can I still use the same setup with a Herbie or would I have to T the main drains into one line and then T the emergency drains into a separate line that drains into the opposite side of the sump?

You will be fine. Ideally you would not tee the siphons. Use a gate valve each. The emergency should not be t'd either. Using this system requires more plumbing under the stand, but worth it.

Agreed, you will need to add some more bulkheads or use some uniseals to add lines to the sump. I have some extra. If needed. it's worth the little extra work and plumbing as you will never get a better drain setup. The return I will highly recommend using a larger than 1" line if you end up changing your pump for a high flow pump. As for two wp25's for that tank. I would say it would be Ok for short term. I ended up using to wp25 on the back wall and one wp40 shooting across. This seem to work great for the corals and fish

gate valves for the main drains, emergency drains dont need a valve, should be unrestricted. The siphon drains should be separate but I don't see why you couldn't tee off the emergency drains. I would just step up the pvc a half size after the tee. Also try and use 45's as much as possible, 90's can be real restrictive on a drain
