12g ZeroEdge!

What would you do if you had a 12g ZeroEdge? I have one and haven't a clue what to do... I also do not have a light yet. So, I ask, could some of you nano reefers give some ideas as to what your 12.2g (16" x 16" x 11"T) ZeroEdge display would encompass? If you could list lights, corals, fish, etc., that'd be quite awesome.

Most Rimless Tanks require a Check Valve. These can often fail. If I were going to plumb my rimless zero edge tank, I would encorporate this into the middle of the tank as my return from the sump. When I posted this before, one guy that had a zero edge used this design, and it saved his butt once when his check valve did indeed fail, and he caught it before too much trouble. Then he put this into the tank, and was able to remove the faulty check valve all together

This is how it works.

I would then build up a center island Like the volcano thread that's recently been so popular to hide the return.

And around the island I would place numerous clams. I'd feed heavy and filter heavy. Any algae on the glass will obstruct the view.

Few fish, as I would hate to constantly be fishing them out of the sump.
That being said, I'd make sure there was an area in the sump to catch wayward fish so they didn't end up in the return pump.

Hmmm, I'm definitely thinking pendant (I have an old Current Outer Orbit pendant... it even has moonlights! or possibly two 12w LED Panorama Modules...), and loving the clam idea...

dogstar, you have solved what I have been constantly thinking of for the past week!!! Thank you!!! Definitely going to use that in the design. That also prevents the turbulence at the surface which causes the splashing when the water slides down the side of the acrylic... Genius!

Get an odyssea MH Pendant for 100 bucks. Replace the bulb and its as good as any decent fixture out there. Dont listen to the bad reviews a have one of there 48 inch halides and theyrrrrrrr great!!.....anyway, i agree with scarlet reef, a clam tank would be baddd ***. Imagine just a couple giant maximas or sumthin in there. that would be soo cool

Regarding an LED pendant, which is most likely going to be what will happen, I would create a box of black (or granite) acrylic with the bottom open that would cover the footprint of the tank as a canopy. It would be suspended above the tank like a pendant. In it would be 4 50/50 Stunner 6w LEDs placed around the perimeter of the central rock structure. It'd give the whole operation a pretty cool modern look to it. I'll post a pic later today of the tank and the stand...

exactly what i was thinking. make sure you have a way to incorporate fans for cooling.



idk about 6w LEDs though. i just used the standard crees that everyone else uses for my build

With a 12 gal tank, I bet you could get by with a 1/2 inch return line inside a 1 1/2 inch outside pipe. One way to "CHEAT" and get more flow is to use garden pipe instead of plumbing pipe. The thin wall sch 200 pipe is thinner but uses the same fittings and allows much more flow. Good luck.

I have one. I use a Mag 9.5 as a return pump. I spose a 7 could have worked. I just replaced my lockline return with a pond fountain return.

As for lighting ... I had a disco ball pendant, but then changed it to a LumenMax3.

Evaporation will be an issue... so use a sump with an ATO. This increases total volume as well and aids in stability.

These tanks are great and although you and I have the smallest verions, they are a show stopper even when next to much larger reefs. People love the way the water flows.

As far as the check valve is concerned, you wont need it if you have a concealed stand pipe... you can see pics of mine in my gallery. Also... I never had a fish go over the top... but you also have to be wise in what you keep in there. B/W perc, shrimp...

snails on the otherhand will be on both sides of the acrylic. and algae cleaning is now inside and outside... Try and keep the snails inside since when they are on the outside, they create little roostertails of water that WILL hit your floor.
