180 Gal Inwall project begins

Well, I just spoke to David at Trigger Systems and he said to try either bio balls or live rock in the area underneath the spray bars. I am a little hesitant with the bio balls, but he said that they would work a little different because they would be under the water instead of above water. Because they are under the water they would work more as a bubble suppression versus there normal bacteria collection when the water just trickles through them. Hopefully I explained that correctly. He said that I could try live rock but the bubbles may not adhere to them as well. Any suggestions on this matter?

We are trying to decide if we want to run seperate pumps for everything. ie: Pump for returns, pump for protein skimmer, pump for chiller, and pump for future frag tank, etc. It seems as though it would be easier to have one large pump controlling everything. I was looking at the sequence pumps but unsure as to what size we would need to run everything.

180gal tank
2 - 3/4" sea swirls for the returns
Aqualogic 1/3 HP inline chiller
AquaC EV240 Protein skimmer
Future frag tank
Line to calcim reactor

This is the sump/refugium we are going to have...

Any Suggestions?

Try filling the second section with cheato. or some type of dense macro algea, Not a real fan of those sumps. They look pretty although

Nothing new really happening with the tank, but we are interested in tradeing for some encrusting Montipora if anyone has any colorful ones available.

The tank looks great! I'm in the market for an external pump and was wondering what you thought of the Dart? Would you consider it quiet, quiet enough for a bedroom?

Good luck with those bubbles, I'm sure once everything gets a good coating on it they will disapear.

Thanks! Dart...So far so good!! Yes it is definitely quiet. But remember this is a 3600 gph pump.

We are still working on the bubble issue. Hopefully resolve it soon!!!

ha, now you have me stumped! Would you put the Dart in a family or bedroom under the stand? The whole it's "def. quiet and then the "remember this is a 3600 gph pump has me all turned around!!

Newschool,

If I was to buy a pump again it would be a Sequence hands down! I have owned a Dart amd Hammerhead both very quiet and powerful.

I think when Andrea wrote that she just wanted to make sure that the tank you plan on running that pump on would be large enough. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with the pump. We have one pushing our returns and one for our closed loop. Very happy with our choice.

Dennis and Andrea,

Are you two going to share the end results of the tank.......you know that all reefers and RC members like pictures!!! LOL

AJ

Thanks Dennis & Andrea. I have it planned for a closed loop for a 36 x 36 x 24. I thought it was the right choice but now I'm wondering if it may be a little over kill.

Dennis & Andrea....I was planning on using the Dart on my new 120 with the Ocean's Motion 4way. This will be in my living room, so it's nice to see that it is a quiet pump.

Hopefully I will have the same luck as you.

Todd

Since were talking about the Dart, I want to put one on my 90g and have it run 4-5 returns.

Is that to much? Will my flow be killed if I use 5 returns? Or will it ahve enough?

Im running a BB tank so I want there to be enough flow across the bottom so nothing settles at all.

AJ, yes we will be posting more as more happens. It's going to be a little while till we can afford to do more.

sellout007- I dont see any reason that it wouldnt be enough 3600gph might be a strain on your overflows, but you will be loosing some flow due to branching off to your returns. My best suggestion is to make sure your sump is big enough to handle that much flow so you don't run into the micro bubble problem that we have.

Its going to be used as a CL pump, I run a mag7 on my return.

Which brings me to my next question. What size drain holes should I have and how many?

Right now I have a 1" drain, should I make taht a 1.5" and then add another 1.5"??

we (i mean Rod) drilled a 2" hole in the back or our tank and currently have 2- 3/4" sea swirls over the sides of the tank. We had to dial down the pump because the sea swirls are rated a max of 850gph. We have decided to plumb in another line to get the full flow out of it.

The dart is designed with a 2" input and a 1.5" output, so you could leave in your 1", add another and bring it together to 2" OR drill our your 1" to 2 " and go from there.

Most recent picture of our tank. We just got a WHOLE BUNCH of new pieces (Mostly encrusting montis!!!) We'll post pictures as soon as they color back up and are mounted.
