I could spend all day watching my tank, taking photos of the tank and post processing images... my wife just looks at me shakes her head and laughs :)

haha my wife does the same thing... every time I pull out the camera shes all "don't you already HAVE a good picture of that coral?"

"yes honey but I need to take regular photographs so I can track the growth"

*rolls eyes*

:D

Just came back from the LFS- and good news! The Yellow Tang, Purple Tang and Six Line Wrasse are ready from quarantine! YAY!

I wasn't going straight home so I left them there but will likely return over the weekend to bring the new guys home.

I'm very excited to get them in and to make my next order of fish.

Can anyone comment on Black Tangs? I know they are beautiful fish. There are a few available from a distributor and I was offered one. But they are quite pricey. I was wondering if anyone can has one and can tell me if they are worth it. I know they are beautiful fish, but I'm trying to see it its money well spent, or if I should invest that in other fish or corals.

Thanks!

I wouldn't spend the money. You already have a purple and a yellow. They'll probably kill it.

Thanks Chad. That's what I was thinking. It's a great looking tang, but I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on a fish when I have so much more to add to the tank.

The Yellow and Purple aren't gong in until tomorrow, so they would only have a few weeks on the Black Tang, but I won't do it...

Lastly... I was taking a few shots of one of the acroporas, and noticed some sort of lesion on the tissue... I posted a thread on the SPS keepers forum to see if someone can help me identify what it may be. Here's the frag:

Any ideas?

has the alk been stable? i have heard of certain picky SPS getting burned tips when alk fluctuates and they are under intense lighting.... but thats just a guess. the day I added a blue ORA "plum crazy", the tips looked slightly burned like that but recovered the next day completely. I did a lugols dip before it went into the tank, so maybe that helped for me....

I hope its that and not some coral pest like redbugs.

Since its just a frag (and thus easy to remove), if it were mine, I would take it out and do a lugols solution dip for 10-15 minutes, turkey baste it, and then look at what flies off up close on a white background with some kind magnifying glass to make sure theres no redbugs. I wouldn't panic thought! :)

if there were no pests, then the lugols is also a good way to stop the spread of any bacterial infection that may be looking at the coral like a tastey meal, I think the chance of the lugols dip causing more harm is very very low... others may disagree.

Did you happen to put you hands in the tank? I sometimes touch a coral and it looks very similar to that when its under a macro. Nice pictures, I might of missed it, buit what are you shooting?

Thank you Mark!

I'm shooting with an old Canon Digital Rebel 300 - the original 6.3 megapixel, slow to start, can't shoot more than 200 ISO, small screen, no live view dinosaur :)

But I have the lens to make up for it. I have the Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro. Its an amazing lens.

Funny you should say that... I did move the rock where that frag is located a few times yesterday. I had to reposition it to rescue a frag that fell behind the rocks and handled that piece a few times while resetting the rock work.

I didn't think touching it could cause it... I will look today when I get home from work... hopefully it will the same or better.

If it does spread, I will run to the LFS and get something... I got 2 main recommendations:

- Tropic Marine Pro Coral Cure
- Lugols dip

At home I have iodine.

I will see how it looks. I should also be getting my Yellow and Purple Tangs and Six Line Wrasse today... I hope it ends up being a happy day :)

Thanks!

HOLY SALLY LIGHT FOOT!

I could barely believe my eyes! I was just feeding, and gave my RBTA a piece of scallop.

I kept on doing my usual routine feeding mysis and pellets saw the anemone ingest the piece I had fed it.

A few minutes later I looked back to the RBTA and a sally light foot crab was standing on it "digging", and before long it had retrieved the piece of scallop from inside the anemone!!!!

I wish I had my camera handy to capture such audacity!

Fish Update!

Fish Update!

Last night the Yellow Tang and Purple Tang went in!

All was good for about 10 seconds, until the Flame Fin and Rabbit Fish spotted them.

It didn't take any longer than that and the two new comers were getting beat up! Such bullies! They were getting chased around and got nips on their bodies and fins.

After about 1 hour or so they seemed to ease off on the new guys... or at least on the Purple Tang.

(you can see some of the nips on the fins)

The PT is already eating and seems to roam around a bit more freely. Nobody seems to be messing with him anymore, but the poor Yellow Tang is still being attacked and is hiding most of the time. I have not seen him eating in my tank yet and he's starting to look pinched in the stomach :(

I'm hoping they stop chasing him around so he can settle down and start eating.

Lastly... I'm still frustrated about everyone's tendency to stay in the left corner!! I could've saved a lot of money and gone for a tank 1/3 of the size :mixed:

They all seem to stay on the left side 90% of the time. why??

Hello everyone, time for a quick update.

The Yellow and Purple Tangs have settled in very well. I was very relieved to see that the Flame Fin and Rabbit Fish finally decided to leave the two newcomers alone. They still show them 'who's boss' every now and then, but they are definitely part of the 'family' already.

The Purple Tang was the first to feel at home. He's been eating like a pig. Mysis, nori, pellets, and grazing algae off the substrate, rocks and glass. The Yellow is a bit more picky. In the midst of the abuse he was getting in the first couple of days I could definitely tell his stomach was starting to look pretty pinched.

He looks perfectly fine now. But I have not seen the Yellow Tang eat any pellets or mysis. He seems to be sticking to algae and nori for the time being. I'm not worried about it because the belly has filled in nicely, and he's very active, picking at the algae clip and eating plenty. At the LFS he was eating pellets off the bottom of the tank while in quarantine. I guess its a matter of time until he starts eating them in the middle of the water column.

The Purple and Yellow Tangs were a great addition. I'm very pleased with they behavior and added activity to the tank. The Hippo Tang seems to be leaving the clowns a bit more these days and hanging out with the two newcomers. The Yellow is still a little skittish when I'm around the tank, and hides. It will take a few more days....

I didn't post an update about it, but I also put in the Six Line Wrasse. Its been hiding in the rocks and I only get a glimpse or two a couple times a day. It will probably take a few more days before it decides to come out into the open.

I dosed Mg and Ca for the first time and also an Alk buffer, but the Alk went back down pretty fast. (so to answer your question, Ryan, I don't think my Alk has been very stable). Regardless, the corals are all doing great, and showing a lot of growth. The RBTA has gooten great greenish coloring and the tips are looking more and more bubbly with each passing week.

I'm still ticked off at the sally light foot crab that now strategically stalks the anemone every time I feed it, waiting for me not to be around to try and steal the food from the tentacles, or even from inside the anemone, even after it has fully ingested what I fed it.

I need to get this on video. The crab just sits there and when I step away climbs onto the anemone. I fend it off with a bamboo kebab skewer and it goes and hides until I step aside and does the same thing... over and over again. Over time the crab is becoming less afraid of the skewer and as started fighting back. I'm going to have to come up with some solution to this. Perhaps feed the crab a piece and then feed the anemone... but that would be like giving up! I don't know.

As for next steps, I have 12 chromis ordered. They should arrive at the LFS this week and go through quarantine. I'm still debating on whether to add cardinals as well and I'm kind of stuck with my livestock plan for now. Not sure what else to add.

So far I have (in the order introduced):
- Flame Fin Tang
- Fox Faced Rabbit Fish
- Blue Spot Jawfish (x2)
- Black Clown Fish (x2)
- Hippo Tang
- Yellow Tang
- Purple Tang
- Six Line Wrasse

I'm also waiting on an order of corals and inverts that will be placed in the next few weeks.

That's about it for now.

Hope everyone has a great week ahead and great Thanksgiving plans!

Best Regards,

What are you talking about, those pictures are amazing.

Thanks Chad. I'm just a bit frustrated with my camera, because its an old model and I can't shoot the way I want. I'll get over it (once I get a new camera - LOL).

Here's one last shot that was left off yesterday. Again, I wish the shutter speed was faster to capture it better... oh well :)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

That is one of the reasons I hate Sally Lightfoots. A lot of people recommend them as part of the CUC, however when they grow to full size, They can and WILL eat any fish they can catch. I have witnessed this first hand and they do it at night when the fish is sleeping. I would recommend throwing it in the fuge, your Anemone will be much happier and so with you further down the road.

Back from the dead :)

Back from the dead :)

Hello everyone,

Its been a few months since my last post.

My tank has been giving me a little bit of trouble over the last few months, hence the lack of updates and pictures.

In December I went out of town for 10 days. Left the aquarium in the care of a friend who actually did a great job keeping everything in order, did not overfeed and everything was great except that my kalk reactor was low on media and it solidified and as a result my alkalinity shot down.

I returned to 6 dKh in my tank :(

My SPS frags took a big hit and I had a big algae bloom that I'm still working through, but fortunately everything else seems to be doing great.

My LPS continue to grow nicely, and the only loss in livestock I had were the 2 jawfish which battled each other to no end. If you recall one of them hopped back and forth from the overflows to the main tank. Eventually one disappeared and recently I found the other stuck to the eductor of my closed loop.

I am running GFO in a fluidized reactor and keeping the alkalinity high and I'm already seeing the algae die off. The filter socks are catching a lot of pieces that are detaching from the rockwork and I can see it starting itself out in the tank.

I added snails (turbos), but for some reason they aren't happy. I'm constantly flipping them over because I'm finding them on their backs.

All levels seem normal.

Good to be back and hope to return to regular updates.

Hope everyone is well.

Best, Itay.
