Indeed... mine's just a little guy :)
Let's all just build a reef-crazed city and combine all our live stock into a huge 1,000,000 gallon reef. I'm sure all our Nemos want to meet.

Cyano Update

Cyano Update

I ordered new RODI filters from Spectrapure this past monday. Spectrapure is located in Arizona. I never got an email from them with a tracking #, so I called to inquire. Person who picked up the phone sounded like he didn't want to be there. I asked about my order, and he said, "Oh yeah, I saw that one. I haven't done it yet." So I ask when. He says, "Today or tomorrow".

HUH?? :eek1: talk about poor customer service.

So, no tracking number that day, nothing the next morning, so I call back. This time, a lady answers, and again, tone of voice suggests she doesn't want to be there. Anyway, she says it will ship that day. I'm getting it on Tuesday now...so it takes over 1 week to deliver stuff from Arizona to California?...whatever! I suppose I'm spoiled with marine depot, premium aquatics, and drs foster and smith shipping the same or next day.

Since I have to wait so long for my new RODI filters, I'm getting nervous about my cyano cuz it's creeping up onto the rock now. I've been blasting the cyano with a turkey baster and doing 10% water changes every other day, but the cyano returns the next day.

I gave in and dosed chemiclean thursday. Cyano's gone now. I did a 20% water change today as the directions suggest. I also got a great deal on a Tunze 6060. It was only $100 with the magnet. I've been looking for a 6101, but at this price, it will tie me over until I find a 6101.

So my current flow is the 6060, (2) 6201's, and a Velocity T3 return pump. I hope my zoas don't get blown off their frag disk!

My new skimmer should hopefully be here by the end of next week. :)

I've spoken to a couple people at Spectrapure and got good CS. I believe the main tech. support person I spoke to was Debbie. Nice woman and very attentive.

Good to hear you're winning the battle vs. cyano T.

Sucks that things are getting held up. Did you order spares or just enough to do this filter change?

New skimmer will help with the problems. I bet your looking forward to the day you can look back on this and shake your head.

If I remember correctly, when I ordered filters before, it also took a while, but I didn't mind since I was setting up the tank. It's different when I'm waiting for filters to clear up a water issue :)

I didn't order extra (I should have), but I've spent enough money lately :)

On the fish front, my desjardini and sohal are still buddies and eating like pigs. I want them to shzz all over my coral :D

I got lost in the new replies but did you try to reduce the light period? You can also turn the light off every few days to help reducing the propagation of the cyano. It will help to give smaller portion of food to your fishes.

Richard, I did reduce my photoperiod - just 1 hour though :)

I considered the 3 days "lights off" thing, but was worried about my coral. I really think the issues that caused the bloom were old RODI filters and overfeeding my fish. I did reduce feeding, too.

Terry, I know a reefer that was running his lights 6 days off and one day off. I have done a 48 hours blackout before. I even put a blanket over the glass. Your corals will be ok.

Edward - the 6060 is the smallest Stream pump at 1585 gph (non-controllable). I thought it wouldn't do that much, but it's creating a sand dune in the front left corner of my tank, and my zoas are FLOWING! :D Kind of scary looking the way the skirts are moving around! Right now, I have the 6060 to the left of my overflow and pointed towards the front left corner of my tank.

I may have to play around with the positioning, but I don't think I'll get any cyano in that area of the sandbed anymore :)

I still want a 6101 though ;)

Mark - I'll give that a try next time. Coming from someone who has such beautiful coral, I'm confident that it can be done w/o negative consequences!

no wonder t-bone has diatom on the sandbed he has less flow than my 50g ;) ;)

JK tbone what is your total flow in tank?

So I am confused Terry from another posting; did you get your BKSM yet or did you decide to go another way. I kind of lost track of the last week. It must of been all the fumes from the staining :D

Nick, I thought you'd say I have diatoms because I'm not running an ATB Large :D

Flow:

T3 return = 800gph
6060 = 1585gph
6201 (I run 30%-100%) = 1585-5283 gph. One is always running at 30%, while the other ramps up/down between 30-100%

So flow ranges from 5555 gph-9253 gph. With an estimated water volume inside my display of 160g , that only gives me 35 -58 x turnover.

Sounds like I could use that extra 6101. I wonder how many people take the "max flow rate" of their powerheads when calculating the flow they have in their tank.

Mark - still going with the BK SM. awaiting delivery still...

For me, it was either the BK Deluxe, BK SM, or ATB medium. I wanted to do either the Deluxe or ATB, but both would have required custom collection cups to be made, and I worry about the future should I crack a cup...how long would it take me to get a new one in? So, I'm going to try the SM. It needs to be run wetter than the Deluxe, but that may be a good thing for me, as I plan to take both of my Phosban reactors offline and to help battle any future cyano episodes

Gotcha. I am sure it will be worth the wait. I still have about two months until my H&S will see water.

Terry, i would consider running with only the artinic for every few days. I have been dealing with cyano in the past and i got it off by playing with the light, flow skimmer and food. Reducing time period, having only artinic on every 2 days, wetter skimmate, less food (rince with RO/DI water). It slowly took off and never came back. It worked for me, hope it can also work for you :)

My 90 will be up and running until "that" day comes. I will be putting the H&S is a tub in a week or two with some LR that I have had in SW for the last 8 months. That will help break in the skimmer and also clean the LR a little. I am just trying to get the tank, stand, and canopy as one so I can have a little more room in my garage for a 100 gal rubbermaid.

This is why I can't wait to get my skimmer

This is why I can't wait to get my skimmer

5-6 days of skimmate from another BK SM250 owner. I hope mine will perform like this

Damn, how can one argue with that. I should just get one or the 250 Deluxe Int.
