180G Waterfall Tank Build

NaClH20NMYVEIN

Red Dragons!
I picked this tank up a few weeks ago from a local guy. As many of you may recognize this appears to be an old Petsmart or Petco tank. The top tank measures 36x36x18 and the bottom tank measures 36x36x14. I plan to move my 90G SPS tank into the top and my 60G zoo tank into the bottom. The return from the sump comes up thru the bottom of the top tank, then the top tank overflows into the bottom tank and then there is an over flow in the middle of the bottom tank to go back into the sump. Here she is...

If that was mine, It would be modded up and down.

Please share your ideas. I have water in it now but I could always take it out to "modded it". More pictures to come.

The more I see that tank, the more I like it. This should be a cool build thread to follow.

I agree, I got some new ideas popping in my head for my next tank :p

i would cut an ovewrflow into the top tank and makea real rock waterfall

I will let you do that! It is already going to be hard enough to keep the mivro bubbles out of the lower tank even without a true rock waterfall. I was throwing the idea of have the return from the sump that is in the top tank be an overflow also but I did not want to run the return up over the back and have it sitting on the top of the tank. As that would really ruin the whole idea of this look down tank. I was also thinking about drilling the back of the top tank for a closed loop but again I did not want to take away from the look. Instead I'm going with 2 seio 1500's in oppsite corners on the controller so the water will tiolet bowl one way for 5 minutes then back the other way for 5 minutes.

Hey Evolust, that tank is going to kick ***! When I saw it, I had tank envy!

Here's a thought for you as far as the waterfall goes. Stack the LR up against the outflow ports and lower the drain on the bottom tank by an inch or so. Maybe drill a few small holes on each side instead of ripping it out or sawing off the top. I understand some of the LR will be exposed, but who cares? I think it will add to the overall attraction and you wont have a micro bubble problem at all becasue the water will flow down the rock instead of pouring in.

I hope this makes sense. I can see it my mind's eye, and it kicks butt! Good luck and I'll be following along. Man I wish I had that tank!

wow!!! i'm jealous. where can i buy a tank like this? where does petco/petsmart get these tanks? i have a few ideas in mind too!!!

That's neat! I always thought they were kinda neat in the store, but a reef could be cool. You can now think of where to place things in terms of looking down, not just from the sides.

How are you doing lighting?
