looks like a nice purple base BTA
To me it definately looks like a nice purple base magnifica for sure but since its missing the verrucae I am going to have to say its a BTA. But imo it definately has the characteristics of a Magnifica.

I believe the verrucae are on the column. They will be the same color as the column, maybe a slightly different shade. They are more visable near the top of the column. They would not show up very well in that pic. Especially in a stressed out animal.
I am always trying to learn, so if you can post a link that shows, or describes, the verrucae on the oral disk it would be greatly apperciated.
I still think it is H.Mag.

Wow.. the tentacles look bta to me, a few even look like they are slightly inflated but I have never seen one with a purple base. The purple base would make you think it might be H. Magnifica but I have to say it is not, i would say most likely bta.. Nice find if you can get it to color up.

Are you wearing beer goggles?:D :D :D

Please, there are NO verrucae whatsoever on this anemone unless you are looking at some other picture that I am completely unaware of. Did you look at the pictures I provided? Look at the H. Mag in the second picture with all its tentacles tucked in. That H. Mag has a purple base just like Deepbluesea's anemone however it has distinct verrucae which can easily be seen. Deepbluesea's anemone has no prominent verrucae at all.

Oh, and just for the record, the verrucae of a stressed anemone will be just as visibile as the verrucae as a healthy anemone. ;)

I should be able to post some new pics of my purple anem today... I've just taken some shots when the lights are out. I'll take some more shots when the lights come back on and it "shrinks" up for comparison. I still can't get a shot of it's oral disc though I'm trying.

Over at Webmedia (www.wetwebmedia.com/marine/inverts/cnidaria/anthozoa/hetmagnifica.htm)

I've found these photos, none of which show the "prominent verrucae". However, the red one is similar in appearance with that rough looking texture.

I'll also mention that my anem has never taken that sucked in, tentacles coming out of the top look.

It's still attached to the side of the glass but has moved down a little in a lower flow zone area.

No, I don't see any verrucae in his pic either. I was just trying to say that he was looking for them in the wrong place. The uper column of deepbleusea's anemone is in the shade. If it has verrucae they would not show up well in that pic. In your pic the uper column is very visable so you can see the verrucae very well. The center pic that deepbluesea just posted would look identacal to his H. Mag if you bleached out the tentacles. The verrucae on H.Mag can be very close in color to the column. Just because they do not show up well in photos, its not evidence that they are not there. This still looks like H. Mag to me.

The first photo is with the lights off and from the rear... See how extended it is. I see no verrucae

The second photo is with the lights on for a about 10 minutes... See how it's pulled itself in... You can partially see the oral disc though..

*#%@%!!!!!! I hate being wrong!!!!!!!!! After those last two pics I'm not so sure anymore. It's really starting to look like a BTA.

Thanks.... that's what got me trouble in the 1st place...

I thought it looked unique at least I had never seen one like it before, so I figured I had to scoop it up.

It's interesting because even though it's only been in my tank for like 10 days or so the tentacles are already starting to darken up, the green tips are becoming more pronounced.

Can't wait to see what this little baby turns out like once it's fully acclimated to light again and built up its zooxanthellae

It's still in a low light level area and retracts when the lights come on. Hoping that at some point it will wonder around and find a nice "show" spot...

That's the one thing that's nice about putting the anem in first... The entire aquarium will be built around it rather then having to worry about it wondering about and killing other things. Just have to get it to settle on a place out in the open. Then of course it will probably move again but that's reef keeping.
