2 bad things and 1 good thing

It has been about a month now, and finally feel up to posting this.

As some of you may remember a while back I received a Red Haddoni from the Diver's Den section of LA. In addition I had (( yes had )) a blue one from there that had been with me for 3+ years. Well, both of them are no longer with me.

While I don't know for a fact, I am pretty certain that it was because I tried some new salt -- the TM bio-active stuff. After talking to Randy (( the Chem guru )), it seems that that stuff is too much for stressed anemones. It is similar to vodka/sugar dosing. In hindsight I can now see the anemones reacting poorly to it, but at the time I didn't. IMO, the added bacteria was too much for them -- the red one because it was still new and the blue one because it never fully recovered from it spawning (( stress induced )) event a year ago.

Both of them started to disintegrate, and when I realized what was going on it was too late -- when back to my normal salt, TM Pro. I tried everything but they were too far gone.

My other 3 Haddonis, are doing great, but did show a little sign of stress when I was using that salt --- again only in hindsight.

So, RIP...

The pink skunk pair was upset for a few days, but now are in my green one -- which ticked off my porcelain crab.

And the good news to follow.

About a month ago Pacific East had a couple of Haddonis for sale, one being a red one, which was slightly bleached. I decided to take a chance on it...

Arrived 5/27

In the styro "box"

In the bag, can sort of see the mouth -- tightly closed.

In the bucket.

First day in the tank -- the mouth was slightly open. Was a bit concerning considering what had just happened. On the other hand not surprising, since it was shipped.

The next night I changed out my carbon and did a 10 gallon water change, and its mouth was closed the next morning. I did my normal light acclimation -- 3 layers of screening, 1 layer removed every 7 days.

Here is a picture from last night -- it is a lot bigger then stated. Still a bit on the bleached side, but is doing great.

Sorry to hear that I am a big fan of if its working dont change it. Did you do a big water change with your old salt before you added the new nem?

I know, it was really stupid of me -- didn't think it would have that much of an effect.

Yea, and there was 3 weeks b/t the last time I used the "new" salt and getting the new Haddoni. Figure I changed at least 30 gallons -- 75 gal tank, with 30 sump.

Sorry to hear that Todd. :(
But I love the new red haddoni!! I hope it continues to do well for you. I have a gorgeous purple haddoni that I recently purchased from Pacific East.

Did you consider the possibility that their food could have been bad? I'm sure you did but just wanted to ask.

Sorry about that!I think we have all lost somthing super expensive like this before!Hope you can find another Blue Haddoni. They are pretty hard to find in the deep Navy Blue coloration with out paying the high price.

I hope that the Red Haddoni does well.Looks very nice.As you stated a bit bleached, but I think after a few weeks and a few good feeding, the coloration should come back!

"a lot bigger than stated"

wow that anemone has inflated very nicely!!!! Gorgeous and probably very happy to be in your capable hands!

Sorry about your loss. Your anemones were some of my personal favorites when I ran across your pictures. The new one is looking great, and I feel it's in the best hands to help it flourish well in it's new home. :)

yeah, it's not the money that gets into you, but the death of the animal that you come to like, love and attached to.... plus all the efford and the worries to get it pass 1 week, 1 month, 2 months.....etc.... and just when you thought you are out of the woods.......... 2 beautifull animals gone....

Wow, I have just now read about this..so sad :( Todd. That is just an awful lesson to learn. I just about cried when I read this. Greatest sympathies for your anemone loss. Love the new red haddoni, looks great with your saddle back clown. Very gorgeous combo. :)

So sorry to hear about your other two anemones. They were really beautiful. I hope the new one thrives for you.

Thanks, it was a tough 2 weeks.

I saw that purple one, and really thought about getting it, but was a bit gun shy and wanted to see how the red one did/does.

I thought about that, but I hadn't feed them during that time.

Yea, that blue one was my pride and joy, was such a great color.

Hard to see in pictures, but it has already started to color up.

Rats, your skunks must not be too happy about that. Sorry about the losses

They were freaked out for the first 2 days, but now that they found the green one, they are happy again and resumed spawning.

Thanks a lot, that is nice to hear. I want to say that they listed it at 9", it is a lot bigger than that.

Very sorry to hear about you losses, very few things in the hobby are worse than losing prized anemones. On the upswing that red must be mighty fun to stare at!

Thank you very much. Just glad that I have lots of pics of the old one.

That's wild! It would have never even crossed my mind that a different salt could do that.

It wasn't the salt per say, but the bio "stuff" that was added to it. Just like sugar/vodka dosing. I am still using TM salt, just not the bio stuff.

Yep, that was the kicker -- the money didn't matter (( well it did, but... )) it was the time and effort that I had put into those. And losing such hard to come by anemones.

Thanks Christina, I almost cried when I saw it happening.

Yea, the saddleback is pretty happy. Has 2 Haddonis to choose from, and it splits its time about 50/50 between the red one and this one,

Thanks.

Yea, it is nice to walk up the stairs (( that tank is in the "loft" area on the 2nd floor of my townhouse )) and see that red Haddoni as I walk up them.

You said you blue carpet was never the same after the spawning incident which occurred; how so? Was it wondering, gaping mouth, or something else? Just curious as I had to return my blue carpet due to it being from my perception, "unhappy." My clowns just stirred the sand too much around the base of the foot causing it to shift positions and causing rockslides, so i'm back to a colony of rose and gbta's.

The red carpet looks good btw and how is the black coloration coming along with your SI percs?
