20,000$ in 4 fish

I saw one of these at my LFS, they were treating it like a god, and was on reserve for this dentist apparently. It was called a Gem tang, i came home and looked it up, they cost 5000$ each.

So lets enjoy em a lil. To me it looks like a tang covered in ich.

I think they're quite a beautiful fish but the price is quite ridiculous. The average going price I usually see from DD is about $2500 and in other countries the going rate is about $500 USD.

If memory serves they come from a fairly dangerous place to collect from hence them fetching a high price. They are not that uncommon of a fish though.

Most of the fish come from the sea, but we don't have to pay such a large premium for them.

Geeze you could buy a nice pair of barret 50's with high end scopes, maybe even add night vision for that kind of dough. $20K in fish? Now that I think of it my down payment on one of my new investment properties was not even that much. As my Grandfather used to say, "a fool and his money are soon parted". LOL Pretty fish though.

I could stock all 3 of my tanks in tangs and angels for less than he paid for one fish.. although gem tangs are neat looking there are many many tangs that i think trump the looks/colors of the gem tang by a country mile at a small fraction of the price to boot

There are reasons why they are so much. Someone is taking a huge risk with them and deserves to be compensated. This is the reason that Japan and Asia get a lot of fish you never see. They will drop the big bucks and exporters know it.

Only problem with that analysis, greenmonkey51, is that I am betting the guy really taking the risk, i.e. the diver going down there to get the fish, only gets a tiny fraction of the 5000 asking price. The fish store owner, risking virtually nothing, gets way more.

well thing of it this way if the LFS dont make money on fish than wat else r they goin to make money on. and as to the fish store takin risk yes its the risk of the fish dying. the diver take no risk. i dont think a shark goin to bite when they havestin for the fish. i want to make sure so those fish cost 5000 a fish or 20000 a fish?? ill rather get the black tangs =) once tank is stable im thinkin of gettin 3 black tangs

gem tangs are so dope, really puts the black tang to shame, but I would rather get a deformed tang as such like david saxby with his yellow/albino tang and his yellow tang w/ black tar like markings.
