2000g System overview

you gave me more ideas than I gave you.

Switching that pump to the first cirucit listed may not give you any added protection if the heaters are set to come on at the same time. If they are staggered, which is what i do with everything, then you could see some benefit.

I now have 4 DC4HDs and 1 DC8...and I may add another DC8 for my QT...it just gets crazier and crazier!

I screwed up big time. I should have done this work before getting the tank. Today I wrapped the tank the the statue of liberty under construction.

I decided to take the ceiling off and slant the ceiling up to the roof to give me from 2-6 feet more room to work and a way to for the heat to rise.

Dude! That was good thinking though. Headroom is really important. I only have about 2.5 ft over my tank so it makes it more difficult to work in and around. It's just the way it had to be and I wanted the 14" of insulation for sound abatement.

If your worker had a cartoon bubble over his head, it would say, "This guy is crazy!". :D

>>>my wife saw that and laughed her *** off !!! Shes been saying that since I started this project.

I had a fellow reefer over the yesterday and he brought his wife over to see my setup for the first time. They have a nice 75g room divider and he is really good with LPS and softies. Their tank is really sweet.

Anyway, she was stunned by my tank and used the term, "this is crazy." I have a hard time disagreeing really. :D

I can imagine how the conversation between them went on the drive back.
Him, "So... pretty cool tank huh?"
Her, "Don't even think about it."

NYVP, I will subscribe to your thread. I like to read about dream systems. I wrote a few thoughts and questions I had while reading your thread. Everything is looking great. I am sure you are working hard during this three-day weekend.

“In goes the new double door.....
And my wife thinks its for her ....
Little did she know the real reason was I needed the extra 36" to get the tank into the house ” Does your wife read this thread?

I agree with spazz on page 4 of your thread about the temp drop. Perhaps a low flow through your cistern would be a good way to control the difference in temperatures.

Jnrarowe has a good thought about aptaisia take up residence in your cistern. My overflow has an area about 30” deep. It has mini feather dusters, bristle worms, mysis shrimps, pods, and aptaisia. The aptaisia I remove when I see them. Your cistern is almost twice the size of your tank and will have a big influence on your tank. It might be two years down the road before you know the benefit or non-benefit of the cistern. Keep us updated.

Skris,
Do you do water changes in your large system? I read that closed systems will have high levels of dissolved organic nitrogen.

“I decided to take the ceiling off and slant the ceiling up to the roof to give me from 2-6 feet more room to work and a way to for the heat to rise.” How hot does in get in your attic? I live in Florida for nine years and it can get crazy hot there. I wonder if the attic will warn the tank or the tank warm the attic

welcome to the thread:

I appreciate your input

>>> yes she does every so often.

>>> My thoughts are with high flow 3x turn over it really isn't getting that chance.

>>> remember the flow to the cistern is after a resirq skimmer, RDSB, refuge then the cistern. I would think most items should be removed by then. also add in no light and decent turn over plus a powerhead spinning around in there should keep things mixed up.

>>> yes I will be using NSW for changes

>>> the sides walls are insulated from the attic ( and opposite)as well as on the top of the slant will be a 150cfm fan exhausting hot air out of the fish room. Thanks for the ideas please keep them coming.

How do you plan to make up the 150 cfm you exhaust? Hope there are no gas vents nearby, like for a hot water heater. Just in case you haven't picked out a vent, the panasonic whisper vents are well worth the investment - I can barely hear mine when it's on venting my hood.

Matt

Good point no vents on that side of the house. I am actually adding an a/c vent to blow across the top of the tank to input cool air into the room. Good call on the vent...that's the exact vent I'm buying. I couldn't decide which to buy the 150 or the 190 cfm. I decided to go with the smaller to start.

I did the same thing with the AC - had a new duct installed directly over the tank. I think it really helped my tank temps and the overall temperature of the room that the tank is in (mine is open top with a hanging light fixture).

Can you tell me more about where you are going to get NSW? I sure would love to be able to do something like that but without a boat, I don't see a way to do it in the Central FL area...

There are guys here that do it for a living (nsw) they say getting it at high tide is best.

ok after a long holiday weekend here is my electric update.
I now have 4 circuits with 36 switchable outlets
18 are on regular switches and 18 on my Neptune through 2 DC-4HD's and 1 DC-8.
This is the back of my nuclear reactor control panel

CIMG0551_edited.jpg

This front of panel.

To explain the center single gang boxes are my GFI's to the right are my switches and to the left is 2 - 2 gang box for the DC-4's which will go in the middle when the wall is up

CIMG0553_edited.jpg

and 2 4 Gang boxes for my DC-8's

CIMG0554_edited.jpg

This is what started off as a clean sheet that turned into my diagram of hell. At least everything is #'d and coded so I know #12 switch shows where # 12 outlet is

CIMG0556_edited.jpg

I'm sure its hard to envision it but I hate having wires showing so everything will be in the sheetrock. The back panel will be able to open if I need to change anything. There will be no switches or outlets under the tank. Every pump under the stand will be # and color coded and go into a switchable outlet outside of the tank. Hope you understand... I hope I understood what I did. Only time will tell.

I like it! My tank room is a maze of wires. I try to keep everything tidy with cable staples, zip ties, etc. but it is still a lot of wires. I couldn't believe Steve Weast's equipment room. I honestly don't remember seeing any wires!

That is going to be really nice when it's all finished. So the DC8's will power wall mounted outlets instead of the DC8's being used directly?

Where are you getting the NSW in our area?

i assume my shop (across from exotic aquariums on bird) has NSW because sometimes he runs out and has to wait for his shipment of saltwater - which i doubt he would do if he was mixing it himself...

There are guys with poly tank on the back of pickups that go to the bridge at high tide and fill up. They filter the water and deliver to your house, I have a 90g tank outside just for that delivery and a tube going to my system from there.
