2014 BoD Nominations

Please folks, remember when voting, consider whom, and what is gonna enhance the club and make it more fun... Consider ones availability... And please go with someone who is a total reef geek... It will make the club more fun...

I am not sure if it is necessary, but I happily second the BODs nominations of : Icy for pres, BfishLpond78 for VP, hans1976 for tres, and SweetD for secretary.

There have been some really neat ideas discussed for the coming year by Icy and Mike and I for one am excited to see them come to fruition. I also feel that when the current BOD are willing to stay on keeping that continuity is a good idea for the club.

Agreed with captc07
Especially if this current board will be starting to set things up for the 2014 conference.....with a new board coming on it wouldn't be fluid ...........

I respectfully disagree. It was them who decided not to have one this year. Why should they get the chance to plan it for next year? I think we need some new blood. I second Chriskid for Pres and Collin for VP. They also have some really great ideas. And not to mention reef geeks by definition.

I agree with the reef geeks ......but the decision not to put one on I think was a good one due to the year prior fiasco. The conference was good and everyone worked hard for it everything was just so last minute and there was no communication from the leadership.......that year......hopfully this upcoming event will be different ..

Conferences take 12 to 15 months to plan out. MACNA 2015 is already well under way and that is 2 years away. The first driver is hotel space. Finding a place that can accomidate a group of up to 400 people is not easy, they are often booked out 2 years or more. The 2011 BoD would have had to start the 2012 conference and hand it off to the 2012 BoD.

The 2014 BoD should also be involved as they will be the ones doing a lot of the work. I have reached out to anyone applying for VP & Pres and asked for their email addresses. They serve as ex-officio's on all committee's. Those that responded have been contacted to set up an initial meeting along with the volunteers that gave me their emails.

Reef geeks people, reef geeks, lol...

I have no nominees for any particular spot, but agree with all 4 members of the following for BoD... BigFish, Icy, Hans, and Chriskid... I feel like these 4 are total reef nerds, and more importantly, these 4, IME, are very good with people and communication, and an overall interest in the hobby and using it as social platform... I don't know Hans really at all, but his experience within clubs business aspects, and in conferences and their planning, is second to none here... This is extremely valuable... But more so, Communication, and high level of social interest with the hobby is an incredibly important aspect of a strong, and well run club, that provides enthusiasm, and a drive to work together... And TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER and be total reef geeks about our hobby... Their is none like it...

I'm happy to see everyone getting excited about this. Whichever way the elections go, I think things will improve. I hope that whoever gets elected is full of great ideas, but I also hope that whomever doesn't still comes forward with their ideas as well.

There is no doubt about their enthusiasm for the hobby. I would love to hear the ideas they have for the coming year. I think it would be beneficial to hear what they had in mind.

Well said Captc07

I like all the people being nominated as reefers they are all great people.
But personally being in business you are often left with the impending fact of the best worker may not best leader.

Before voting for anyone I want to know what each persons plans are for the upcoming year and how they plan to accomplish them. I hate to see elections be simply a popularity contest. So I hope when it's time to vote we can use this as the opportunity to get to know each of the candidates and their plans for the upcoming year, basically sell your ideas to us.

One of the things I would like worked on in detail is our clubs website, We should have a site like Boston does that is our own that we can sell advertising space on and in turn help the club put on better meeting and events.

If the Conference takes that long to plan (I am not doubting this at all) then maybe we should have a committee or committees do different segments and the BOD who's terms are shorter than the planning process do things like book the facilities and oversea the individual committees.

Andre,

Are you asking us to strap on the shiny shoes and start doing a little campaigning? :spin1:

I'll try and start this out, this is for whatever position I may or may not get elected for, as either way I'm going to be active in club, CTARS related or not, I love setting up events, being a part of them, contacting vendors and being around everything reef related, especially if its other folks who are passionate as I am. I have some good experience in event planning as I did it for 2 years for an internship in college and I deal with a lot of project management for work dealing with 200 engineers on a daily basis.

Ideas for 2014:
Increased Vendor Support - I would like to see more vendors/Fish Shops be associated with the club.

Plan "“ I have been in frequent Phone/Email/Personal visits with many of the stores in my area along with many online vendors to achieve club discounts. Some of those include but not limited to: Affordable Aquatics, Exotic Fish & Coral, The Coral Reef Shop, Rapid LED, Ocean Wonders, BRS (Club Donations), Two Little Fish (Club Donation). There are currently more in the works, but just to name a few.

In conjunction with Vendor Support, I would like to bring more events to these LFS's, more after hours events, BBQ's and meetings at the LFS's. This just takes a phone call or two with the owners to get them on board and set a date and offer ideas as to what our members are looking for. I have a good idea what everyone tanks inhabit as I stalk you all!

Encourage more LFS sponsored meetings (Example, All raffle prizes come from one particular store) Have said store join us for a meeting and possibly take orders to get a feel for what the club members are looking for.

CTARS Club Store "“ I would like to see the club have a small assortment of items that could be brought to the meeting that all of us go through on a daily basis and be purchased at a reduced rate due to a bulk buy. (Carbon, GFO, Frag plugs, frag glue"¦Etc)

Plan "“ It's pretty self explanatory, but in short, buying these items in bulk in order to reduce the price for the member and have it readily accessible to the club.

Now some of you may argue the point that we should be going to our LFS for these items, and I whole heartedly agree that we should be investing the money to keep these stores open. But a lot of the items that some of us seek are are not available at the stores. (i.e. quality carbon, GFO, frag plugs and glue, lol) I may have missed a store that does, so I apologize in advance. Also this will help bring people to the meetings as they will want to come and receive these items

Frag Swaps "“ I would love to see either Club or Member organized frag swaps, spinning off of Collins get together which was a huge success and an all around awesome time, so again congrats to Collin and his organizing success. I would love to see smaller events like this.

Plan "“ Put together a small group of individuals to help plan these types of activities, I would like to keep the event small, get local shops, local hobbyist to come out and share their corals/livestock. Not limited to just us, obviously there's extremist like Aznuttie, who drove from Ohio. We as a club love to see events, buckets of coral and interact with each other.

Meeting Organization "“ I would like to structure the meetings more so that they run a little more smoothly.

Plan "“ Set a specific itinerary for each meeting, example:

5-5:30PM "“ Social time, exchange livestock, meet and greets / Presentation Setup
5:30-5:45PM "“ Club business / Status / New Members Announcement
5:45-6:45PM "“ Meeting Topic / Discussion / Question/Answer
6:45-7PM "“ Meeting cleanup, Social time, etc.

I would also like to institute a 3 month look ahead for meeting topics/ideas. I want to see meeting topics set and announced on the website, this will give an opportunity to begin planning, secure raffle items, set up speakers and also give members a chance to plan for meeting they would like to attend if they are limited. This also gives members a chance to reach out to other people in hopes they can contribute to the meeting as well.

Well this is all I have for now, I hope it wasn't too over the top, just a few good ideas I have for right now.

Good Luck everyone, like I said, either way, BoD title or not I will be involved!

For those of you who don’t know me, I have been in the saltwater hobby for a little over sixteen years. I started simple, long ago with snowflake, tiger moray eels, and banded sea snake in a six foot, one twenty five gallon tank. However, I gave all of them up nearly ten years ago to begin building a reef tank. I started with a fifty-five gallon with poor lighting and a few feather dusters and some soft leathers. After some research, I bought my second useless light but started growing out my leathers a little and a few LPS. More research and I went to metal halides and my first SPS. From there, I upgraded to a seventy-five gallon, to a ninety and finally to a two hundred ten gallon SPS dominate tank. We’ve all had our ups and downs in reef-keeping over the years and believe me, so have I. I believe that understanding why you have these ups and downs can be both a rewarding and a humbling experience in this hobby. No one should ever roll the dice when it comes to reef keeping or this club which will now bring me to my agenda….

I joined CTARS in 2007 and at the time Jeff, our current treasurer, was President. We had meetings in different locations, had some terrific guest speakers, had tank of the month, had different club events (ie: trips offered, golfing prior to a club meeting) and had some killer CMAC’s. I enjoyed CTARS a lot back then. There always seemed to be a diversity of what was going on. Everything always seemed well organized and thought out as well. I appreciated seeing peoples tanks every month and looked forward to getting my tank to that potential. I liked going to new places and meeting new people. In the past few years, I have missed the old days. There is no reason why we can’t work towards bringing them back.

If I were to be voted in as President in order to bring back some of the organization I once remember, there would be a ‘penciled in’ order of meetings for the year and events. There are a few reasons for this…there is nothing more frustrating than having only a week or two to see if we can actually hold/host a meeting or the topic. This will give the Public Relations Officer plenty of time to organize with us, as well as any lfs or vendors. Best of all, this gives you, the members, plenty of notice and time to get excited for an upcoming meeting. Especially if it happens to be a guest speaker!

I would like to properly bring in committee’s to the club so that the club can run more smoothly. For instance: Lutz Tank Committee and Event Coordination Committee. These committee’s would be appointed and would give a report/overview at each meeting.

Of course I want to bring back tank of the month. The club has been talking about this for some time and if I am elected in, this will certainly be one of the easiest things to resurrect. I would like to appoint a select group of individuals (three) that would be in charge of voting for the year after receiving the nominations from the club members. Prizes would be awarded as before so, the help of the Public Relations Officer would once again be beneficial in this area. Also, anyone willing to go shoot some pictures of the nominee’s and winner’s tanks if needed would be appreciated but, I am also willing to do this task anytime as well.

If any controversy shall arise that has the club in an uproar on the boards than I will call a special meeting at an available location for the members to either vote on or discuss in person rather than on the boards.

I would like to move the meetings around to different areas of the state. This year we were able to go to Norwich only once this year and that was only convenient for some of our members. We need to direct this convenience towards every member of the state.

Eventually, and this would certainly be over time, I would like to work on the bylaws of the club as well as the club webpage. These are issues that the members were upset about at the last election and were brought up at the first meeting and were never addressed this year. I’m not saying they are not important because they are and they both need an overhaul.

My involvement in and outside of this club has been more than fulfilling. I have organized non-club affiliated fragging workshops, done presentations for not only CTARS but other clubs, as well as my children’s schools. This year alone we went to the Maritime Aquarium Trip behind the scenes tour that CTARS set up and Collin’s first annual Old Fashioned Frag Swap that was awesome! I also attended the FFM, Ocean State Reef Aquarium Society Conference as well as the New Jersey Frag Swap.

Lastly, if elected, I would not profit by any means by selling my coral on the CTARS threads. I will instead, support a lfs and club raffles.

I am definitely in favor of the continuity of the Board of Directors. However, I feel this club is at a current standstill and that with myself, Collin and Emery and our idea’s, especially to bring the old back to the new, this club will see a great step in a better direction. I sincerely believe we can get boost of enthusiasm from all members, new and experienced alike.
