Hey guys,
I took my 20gal long tank and wanted to make it into a nano reef. The demensions are 30"x12"x12". I divided the tank by taking 23in for the nano reef and 6in for the refugium. I have a 65watt Coral Life bulb on the reef tank and for the refugium i have a Coral Life 18watt agua life bulb. Filtration is an overflow where the power head pushs the water back into the middle of the tank. My base is a mixture between fine and thicker crushed coral.

Very interesting setup. What do you plan on keeping in it?

Keep us up-to-date with lots of pics.

Are you planning on getting live rock for your tank? and if so from where?

Nice tank, and good luck to you.

yeh i was planing on eventually adding on a more powerful light. For what i want to start with will be fine. I plan on just getting some basic polyps and mushrooms. I am getting fiji live rock out of our show tank at work so its been sitting for awhile so it should be really nice. I am going to get a pair of clownfish for the tank not sure which ones to go with yet. Any suggestions would be appreciated and i will def keep you guys updated with pictures.
thanks

i see one problem. if u use a reverse schedule for your refugium then it will leak too much light into the main display. should have used black acrylic perhaps?

keep the light on the refugium on 24/7 and it will be like a night light for the fish...........and eventually coraline algae will grow and block the light from the refugium reducing the light

Here is the tank now that it is mostly clear. 1.22am. All the lights out in my room

Both lights on

just the refugium light on.

The idea behind the reverse lighting is this...

When plants (macro algae in your fuge, and the zooxanthellae on all of yoru corals) are undergoing photosynthesis when they have light they are essentially taking CO2 from the water. When photosynthesis cannot occur respiration takes over and these organisms put CO2 into the water.

Why does CO2 matter? Mainly for the sake of pH.

In these small tanks there is the possibility to see pH swing up and down when the lights come on and off.

If you have the fuge light on when the display lights are of and vice versa. The idea is that photosynthesis = respiration (roughly) throughout the day. Thus, no pH swings.

This sort of depends on how much respiration/photosynthesis is going on in your tank.... you may be fine if you aren't overly stocked.

You could always drain the tank (since it is not stocked) and spray paint the insides of the fuge area. This is what I would do.

Looks good though! Really.

Sorry if you knew all that... I like to ramble on to myself on RC these days.......

would i need to put a black insert in or paint it? because if i dont need to then i probably wont because it would just be a pain to drain it all out again? What type of spray paint would i need to spray inside the refugium?

can I just seal a background to the inside of the refugium? What i mean is put a seal around the outside of the background on the inner wall facing the reef tank? Is the back ground toxic?

Krylon Fusion is generally used a good non-toxic in tank paint.

I have no idea if it is toxic.

I'm sure you could do this, though I don't know how good it will look. You will probably be able to tell that what you have done, unless you can get a nice tight fit. I don't know about that.

You don't need to do this at all. The tank will be fine and healthy without the divider blacked out.

You will just light from the fuge light mixing with light from your display - this might affect the colours you are hoping to get from you lighting.
