210 AGA RR Project

Well here come all the kinks! I had one of my electronic ballast go
out on me about one month after I fired them up 10-2-05, today
I get home and a second ballast quit working, needless to say how
T-ed off I am, this light and my first light bought in 99 are both
Hamilton Technology lights.the first light to this day still works fine
but it has magnetic ballast not electronic. Well I called Hamilton
and they agreed to send me a new ballast box with magnetic
ballast in exchange for the one I have now for no charge, I just
can't belive something so simple wouldn't last at least 2 or 3 years.
feels good to vent:D

I'm making small improvements as I see them, first one is I changed
over the hard return plumbing on the skimmer to a banjo quick
disconnect and got rid of 3 90 degree elbows, I am still fighting a
interference problem from the UV sterilizer making the temp
controller go wacky I got to look into this a little deeper.
The skimmer has a air input and an ozone input and about 5 weeks
after running, the ozone fitting partial dissolved and cracked it was
a JG fitting, checked around and bought PVDF (KYNAR) fitting its
supposed to be ozone proof. also changing the JG ball valve for
adjusting skimmer input to a small tube to tube gate valve too hard to adjust ball valve accurately. well keep on tweaking

Do you use a ground probe in the tank?

Zeph

hi Zephrant

No I do not use a ground probe as of right now,Mike over at Medusa
suggested I hook up a ground wire some ware on the UV sterilizer,
but I just ordered a ground probe and will give that a shot when it
gets here.

Hi Ereefic & gmac

The streams are held on with the Tunze magnets and they really
work well, they are not cheap but what is?

The flow meters work very well to,I have the one on my skimmer
and one on the effluent of the CR reactor very easy to set a accurate
drip rate.

I found this thread late, I am in the process of setting up a 210 AGA RR. Really great info, love the equipment you are getting.

Did any of you with tanks this size reinforce your floor joists if setting up the tank on a first floor? Or is just putting it against a load bearing wall OK? Or are all your tanks in the basement? (I don't have a basement.)

Also, what are your feelings about the pine AG stands? I have one, and it does not seem very sturdily built. I got this tank as a complete set-up from my mother. She is having health problems, and asked me to take the tank. I needed to upgrade my 120, so I was happy to buy it from her. I'm a little leery of the stand. Any suggestions for strengthening it, or do you all think they are ok? Should I use foam between the tank and wood? Should I just get another stand?

Sorry to interject here, but I figured a lot of the folks that could answer these questions would be parked in this thread. :)

Thanks very much, that is exactly the information I need on the floor reinforcement.

Any thoughts about the stock stand that comes with the AGA RR tank (painted pine)?

Hi LisaD

Thanks for the compliment, 3 of my tanks 65,55,30h are on AGA
stands, and they are designed for the weight.you could email AGA on
there site and they should answer any questions you have. my 210
is on basement floor but if it was on a upper floor I would defiantly
reinforce it. mine with water, stand, rock and sand comes in
at 3650 lbs.

Well good news finally, installed a ground probe in my sump
today and the Medusa PHC300 controller works flawless with
UV sterilizer running, that was the last bug I needed to work out
of this system,if you read in earlier threads the temp readout went
crazy when the UV was turned on.:D

Update 07-23-06

Update 07-23-06

Hi All

Well it's been along time since I last posted, here goes.
the tank it self has been running pretty good but I have
gone threw all the usual symptoms for a 1 year old tank - still two more weeks to go:) last December is when the Hair algae took over took
3 to 4 weeks and a sea hare to solve that problem:D
Had a good 4 to 6 weeks then the Valonia bubble algae took over,
spent 4 weeks siphoning and picking it out to no avail, then went
and bought a Blonde Naso and the bubble algae problem was over
in less then 2 weeks:D Added 2 Kaudern's Cardinal fish and 3
Ocellaris Clown fish 3 days later never saw the Cardinals again:mad:
About 2 weeks after that started getting the dreaded
red cyano bacteria, tried all the usual things siphoning out every
couple of days, more frequent water changes, added a TLF phosban
reactor using Pura Phoslock could not get rid of it:mad:
Finally 2 days ago I treated with Boyds Chemi Clean and today
no more red algae:D (well see how long it lasts)
Tank parameters have been very good since tank been running.
Temp 79.5
SG 1.026
PH 8.2
ALK 9.15 dkh
No3 0.05 ppm
Cal 445 ppm
Mag 1250ppm
Po4 0.03
ORP 390
Go figure even with water parameters good still ended up getting it.
I think probably 2 cardinals missing started it?
