210 Gal - Planning the plumbing

I am getting ready to start my 210 gallon project and having been thinking about the flow that will be necessary with such a large tank. The tank will have 2 build in overflows that I was thinking would feed both my sump/fuge and a closed-loop pump.

I was thinking I’d get a Sequence ReeFlo Dart for my closed loop $218:

And this Pan World 50PX-X for my return from the sump $139:

Between these two I would have 3700 gph (17.6x turnover).

What do you think? Does seem like a reasonable setup? I plan to have a mixed tank of soft and hard corals and nothing terrible exotic at least for a while.

Thanks in advance for any info you could share for the flow you all used for your large reef tanks.

I'll probably have 55 gallon worth of sump. I am not sure yet if it will be all once piece , 55 gal tank or seperate sump 39 gal plus a 25 gal fuge.

I am thinking that 2 seperate pieces would be easier to get in and out of the stand for cleaning.

I'm so glad you said that!! I have 1x 55 gal. and a 30 gal. tank. I don't know about you but I'm starting to feel a little nervous with my build. Alot to consider!!!

I have a 210 (72Lx24Wx29H) that I picked up from a friend. It's a typical LFS setup that is currently fish only.

I'm currently planning some major major changes. hehe

I was thinking of going with a Dart for the main pump, which will go to a spray bar. (still a little up in the air on the spray bar.) On returns, I was thinking of using one return for the fuge, the other for a gravity fed skimmer and a third for backup or possibly T'd to feed a calc reactor down the road.

Instead of a closed loop, I'm thinking of doing a couple of MJ1200 Mods, they resemble Tunze's. (see DIY forum for threads on them)

The main reasons I am leaning towards the MJ's instead of the Loop is that they are more flexible with regard to moving them around, less power consumption, and I don't want to drill more holes in the tank. I suspect they will also be a little quieter, but that's not a huge deal to me. They are also a little cheaper, but there is some DIY involved, which I enjoy.

My 210 is 84x24x25. I have the Dart on a OM 4 way with the 4 returns in the back and a Hammerhead in the basement (14' head) coming up to 2 - 1" seaswirls. I'm happy with the flow and the lack of powerheads in the tank. And if you can put the overflow boxes externaly it keeps things clean on the inside.
