225g Display 500g+ build thread

So I was a bit disappointed with this last batch of pictures.... They made me realize a clean up is in order.

So..here it is..

Clean! A little Glass Scraping, a bit of sand cleaning up...What a difference..

Gorgeous tank! Looks like a masterpiece! Very inspiring, now I need to get the empty 230 out of my garage and get it drilled! I'll definitely refer back here to see your update!

Just curius about how much evaporation you have. I assume you have a auto top off....how many gallons does your tank consume in 7 days and how big is your top off tank?

Keep the picture coming!

Thanks for the kind comments!

I currently don't have an ATO setup, but I picked up a litermeter from a RC member on friday and it should be showing up in a couple days. As of right now.. (I know this is gonna sound horrible) a couple times a week I just turn on my ro/di unit and let it poor directly into my sump overnite.

For a while I was dripping about 2.5 gallons of kalk a day (gravity) fed and I saw a noticeable difference in the tank. It just became to much of a hassle to keep refilling the 2.5gallon jug every day, placing it back on the shelf, resetting the drip rate ect ect..

So Now I'm just going to mix 40 gallon of kalk at a time in a trash bin and use the litermeter to dose about 2 gallons a day, and adjust from there. Hopefully I can get a float valve in the trash bin, and I plan to toss in a pump on a timer to mix it up for an hour a day. That should make the ATO completely automated and fail proof with the worse case scenario of flooding the garage with fresh water if the float valve in the trash bin sticks. (which if anything will just clean the garage floor ;) )

Weekly water changes also keep things about right salinity wise...but I've been trying to cut back to a week and half.. to 2 weeks per water change.. although I am noticing some Green Boring algie on one of my stags.. So.. I think it's time for me to cut back on feeding a little, and get the ozone working again. I'm also well over due for RO/DI unit replacement I've been using the same cartages on this used unit I picked up for 3 years so who knows if it's really doing anything at this point (don't have a tds)

Thanks again! To clean sand I just used my metal scraper to swosh around the water just slightly above the sand, and get the any detrius back in the water column so hopefully it will get pushed back into the sump and to the skimmer, then I basically rake it.. (kinda like one of those bonsai garden thingys)

For the sand by the front edge of the glass. I use the back end of the scraper stab it down to the bottom of the tank, and just swosh the sand around by the edge of the glass, usually the only sand that gets algae growing on it is whats pressed against the glass so it will replace it self with clean looking sand since algae doesn't grow where it's dark. This will disrupt the sand bed a little...but the 1" of sand nex to the glass I disturb really isn't going to effect much.

woo hoo! Got my litermeter to today, and dialed it in. (testing in my kitchen sync)

Right now i'm mixing up kalk filling up my 35g trash bin w/RO water! Tomorrow! ATO/Kalk begins! Yaaa for stability!

Alright I was so excited about actually getting something working within 24 hours of receiving it.. I decided to take some shots of the inhabitants..

Ora Tort :) (currently have a grow challenge on this coral vs ChinMonster.. Loser buys winner Benny Hannas GROW LITTLE FRAG GROW!!!!)

Japcan! (Funny story.. I've had this coral 3+ years.. Bought it as 2 heads.. it stayed as 2 heads all this time.. Magically these past couple months it sprouted little baby heads all around!) Looks really nice when it puffs up.. This is ONE hardy coral... Lived threw total tank wipe outs

Orange Line Tang.. I prefer to call it Grey Line tang. every once in a while it will Flair up.. and it is amazing looking.. usually though it's a dull grey/blue with dull orange stripes.. for some reason these fish HATE algie blennies.. HATE with a passion. Me and a friend both bought these fish around the same time.. and in both our tanks they attacked our blennies.
