230 Ohio reef tank

Ok, started plumbing today. Hooked up the main pump and trying to sort out how many items I can feed the main to. (Skimmer, calcium reactor). Anyone have any experience hooking multiple items to your main? Any recommendations?

Is that the CAT2 Hurricone Protein Skimmer? Liking the setup so far. Your Tampa tank looked beautiful before breakdown. I know this one will either match or exceed it.

Beautiful looking fish room start. I'm jealous that I don't have a house yet. I'm going to be keeping on eye on your thread for the skimmer skimmate production. I want a Super Reef Octopus Skimmer so badly but I'm having space issues as not to block the aquarium or make anything in my living room look unsightly. Would love to punch a hole through the closet in my son's room but I am leasing.

Thanks Newbie,. The skimmer is a Reef Octopus SRO 5000EXT. She is a beast. Worked great on my last set up. I originally had a smaller Downdraft skimmer but decided to upgrade to the Reef Octopus because I didn't like the bio ball maintenance. This one is nice and easy to clean.

Thanks. This will be my 5th set up in 20 years. Hopefully my last. This is actually the first time i have had some extra room to play with. However, if you do upgrade your skimmer and go to the closet option, your son would probable not like the smell to much. lol. This skimmer definitely produces lots of skimmate. :)

I have heard that they are amazing skimmers. I thought about the skimmate smell and in the past I have placed small bags of carbon over the exhaust holes on the skimmer lid which counter acted the smell. Might work again but I am still looking at options.

Looking good.... Check out western Ohio reef club, if I recall there are several in the club who have frags they would be willing to unload......

I am just down the road in Centerville .......

That's a HUGE pump for that tank! I use a waterblaster 5000 on my 475g tank.......

go Ohio more updates ?

Just getting ready to start drilling the bottom of the tank to install a close loop system. (just a little nervous about drilling) Also, I just did some plumbing and solved my water change issue. I wasn't sure how I was going to pump large volumes of waste water out of the basement. I finally decided to plumb a line that will be connected to the close loop directly into the house waste line. Not really to code, but it should work.

In early December I'm planning on finishing off the wood work for the aquarium face.

That's too adorable. I think everyone should buy a tank and the requirement should be that if your oldest child cannot have 1/5 of the space for themselves inside it then you need to purchase a bigger aquarium.

A little more progress made today. Just drilled the bottom of the tank for the close loop and finished plumbing to the skimmer from the main pump. Also started plumbing of the closed loop. Need a few more pieces from the hardware store and will hopefully finish up the rest tomorrow. Just can't wait to start filling it up and leak check.

Leaked checked the close loop. Just found a small slow drip in one of the threaded fittings last night about 4AM. Removed the fitting and rethreaded. Problem solved. Everything is A OK. Cant wait to crank this thing up.

Urghhh! Things are not going as well as planned. After I filled the tank, a small portion of the tank was sitting on the wall frame stud causing the tank to be on a slight tilt. Will have to completely drain, push the tank back and refill.

Also was wondering if any one has had any experience using standard check valves from lowes/home-depot. Was thinking about using one, but thought the spring inside might rust out. Was going to use some quick disconnects to replace and inspect on a regular basis.
