230 Ohio reef tank

Urghhh! Things are not going as well as planned. After I filled the tank, a small portion of the tank was sitting on the wall frame stud causing the tank to be on a slight tilt. Will have to completely drain, push the tank back and refill.

Also was wondering if any one has had any experience using standard check valves from lowes/home-depot. Was thinking about using one, but thought the spring inside might rust out. Was going to use some quick disconnects to replace and inspect on a regular basis.

I wouldn't use anything where metal will touch salt water!

Here's the check valve I was thinking about using. Anyone ever use them before? I know they would have a tendency to get some build up but was planning on replacing them on a regular basis until I upgrade to a larger sump.

For check valves you would do better to go with a transparent one. That way you can see if the valve is well and truly sealed or not. I know Marine Depot has these - not sure who else. Get one with true unions either side for ease of maintenance and eventual replacement.

To make extra sure of a good seal with teflon tape, add a drop of silicone sealer (the aquarium-safe kind) and wipe it all around the tape with your finger. Silicone won't bond to teflon, but it does seal the smallest spaces in the joint.

I have that same kind in mine for almost 2 years now without any negative affect but will probably replace with a true swing type check valve from BRS when I move the system in March :(

Thanks, good to know those work out. Will hook them up today as a temp fix and then will probably swap out with the transparent ones Dave recommended.

I have a Home Depot one used for 3 years, sat in the basement for 4 years. Valve still moves freely inside. Just my .02

Finally, success. Lots of work done today. Drained, moved and refilled the tank. All water is level now. check valves work, but Still need to figure out a contingency plan if the power shuts down. Will have major flooding in the basement. Think I'm going to drill a hole in my sump near the top and run a line to a large bucket in the photo just in case, or at least till I upgrade to a larger sump in the future. Skimmer and everything is running now. Just need start aquascaping, a little more salt and some new live rock to seed the old.

Did a slight modification to the sump/float switch. Didn't like the suction cups on the switch. To many times I had the suction cup fail and switch fall in causing it to dump a whole bunch of kalkwasser mix.

Hello, I'm also from the area and have a 250 reef. I run a Dart gold pump up to a manifold with four 1 inch outlets back into the tank. I have four drains back into the sump as 2 wouldnt keep up with the pump running 100%. Makes for a nice flow in the tank.

MNweman, can you post a link to your set up? Would like to see how you have things running since we have close to a simliar size tank.

I had a Ocean Motion (Squirt) 4 way Switch I had on my old tank that I planned on T'ing off to provide provide some additional flow, but unfortunately it rusted out inside the drum. I wrote Ocean Motions asking the for a replacement drum for the squirt (Discontinued) unfortunately they told me that they are waiting for more to come in from the shop. Wrote them again a week ago and havent heard anthing back yet. Hopefully they will write me back soon.

Been a busy few days. Starting working on the aquascape, and completed the remaining electrical behind the tank. used a few fiber glass rods and some ecobond to secure some rock. Will probably need a few small prices of live rock to seed the old and a little bit of sand for the bottom. Then will start focusing on beefing up my parameters (mag, calcium, alk) to purple up the rock.

Shoot wish I would've seen this sooner I just flew out of Ohio on Friday. Was in mentor for work the whole week, would've been cool to see a fellow reefer's tank.
