2300G Cylinder - Preview

I'm curious about the NSW plans as well. It'd be awesome to be able to divert the overflows to the sewer and the return pump to the NSW reservoir and water change in 2k gallons at a time. As long as it was done frequently enough, the water parameters would be similar. I'm also concerned about the NSW reservoir temperature.

NICE!!

1200 a year, guess i will be visiting a bit!!

not sure if you are going to buy or DIY frag plugs, but i ordered direct from ocean wonders not long ago, AU $$$ was low to mid 90 cents i think.

maximum is 800 small plugs to a box and cost me just over $200 for 8 bags of 100

Everything looks like it is coming together, I saw your frag tanks yesterday they should provide yourself and quite a few other reefers as well as Damer noted.

i wish i lived closer to him.. or you for that fact.. (i would clean your skimmer for free if you let met. haha

Its only like 9000 miles... where's your commitment? :hmm3:

Diablo,
I love the fact that you are using natural sea water for your tank (wish I lived close enough to the ocean to us it). I a questions regarding your pre treatment of the water before storage. What is your plan for heat? My concern with your holding tank being outside that is that it is going to get really hot and kill off all of the organics inherent is seawater. I would think that this would raise no3 and phosphate.

It is quite possible that I might run in to some issues. I will need to suck it and see. Ideally, the water would be pre-filtered.

oh my god, that is just an amazing tank/house/system

sorry if you posted this somewhere, but how much was the tank alone?
AUD$48K

Where did you source those blue iridescent mosaic tiles? Do you have a a brand-name or colour for them?
http://www.sicis.it
The tiles used in the house:
Murano Smalto - coral (red in laundry)
Iridium Degrade - Fern (Green in bathroom)
Iridium Degrade - Iris (Blue in bathroom)
Glimmer - Blue/Green in kitchen / pantry

Thanks Damer & Graeme

He has to mean $48000. I priced a 6 foot dia. 2 foot high cylinder that was almost $4800. That is exactly why I don't have one. :)

BTW ... How do you plan to clean the inside? Given the shape and size, I would think that would get rather difficult...

Necessity is the mother of invention... at this stage I have no idea!

Time to get that PADI certification ! If not let me know I'll fly out and log some bottom time in this system any day

:spin2: I'm not sure it would qualify for open water.

Just so no one thinks I'm rude, I have no intention of discussing cost further than answering direct questions.

Diablo,

I apologize if you answered this earlier in the thread, but was some of the expense related to having the tank built in the UK? Was there not a builder down there who could do it, or even here(maybe slightly less cost associated with shipping)?

Wow this is a very nice tank!!!!

I wonder if you could build some sort of ATS (algae turf scrubber) that could make it run on natural filtration...some people opinion that it could even replace a skimmer.

It's a long time ago now. I think that the tank was maybe 70% of the price I gave. The rest was shipping, duty and storage.

Australia has a much smaller market than the US and Europe for (extreme) luxury goods. It would have been next to impossible to source the 2 @ 16.5' x 4' x 1.5" sheet used to form the cylinder and I'm not sure there is an oven large enough... even if there was, you don't want to risk something like this with a business who is not doing similar jobs regularly. The UK business had access to large sheets of German Acrylic and does a lot of work in the UAE.

I got two quotes from the USA and they were 30% higher. From someone who has sourced equipment from all over the world, I can assure you that US international shipping is amongst the most expensive in the world. Not making any judgment... it is what it is.

In South Africa we have one local guy that does large acrylic tanks. Unfortunately, he's ripped a number of people off (including me). The other custom acrylic guys that operate here source their tanks from Germany, and are eye-wateringly expensive.
