240 gallon CRACKED

okay... What do you think of getting a non reef ready tank with HOB overflows? I was looking at the CPR overflows they have 2 1.5" bulkheads and do about 1600 gph each. I would get 2 of them. I really want to try and avoid having the Mega Flow things in the tank and I'm way too nervous to do the external thing again.

I would go for a reef ready, a little wider than you'd like your display and maybe placing in a false wall in front of the mega flows. I hate the external overflow boxes!

I don't blame you for not wanting to do that mod again. I'm right there with you!

even though we had some words, i think it is necessary to let you know that i am sorry you had to start a thread on this topic...

those HOB overflows are a recipe for disaster. I'd just get something with corner overflows if you're not going to get a custom one with an external. the tank's big enough that you can aquascape around them.

Just avoid a center overflow, its the one thing I hate about my tank.

I'd aquascape around a corner overflow. Mod's make me nervous as well.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for getting an avatar that I can see with my old eyes!!

Alrighty then....

What tanks do you guys (and gals) recommend?

I'm thinking a 220g Perfecto, but I think they only come with the 2 center overflows (well, not centered, but close enough).

I got a price from Ocean Image Aquariums... unless I hit the lottery, that's not going to happen :(
Beautiful tanks, but I just can't do it.

Any other ideas?

Just for the record... I really hate this freaking thread!

Brian,
The new Perfecto tanks have the corner overflows, AGA and Oceanic have offset and center overflows.

I don't really like our offset overflows, but on a bigger footprint I think they'd be less annoying.

i think it depends on the deal u get, i mean if u get a good deal on an AGA with the offset overflows are u really going to say " well thats a good deal but i dont like the offset overflows" LOL.
i think the tank u got with that backglass overlap over the other one was the cause of the problem, if u got a non reefready tank we can do the slot again, all u have to do is carefully cut the silicone off the overflow box with a razor, think of it this way a NON AGA has a real good brace around the top.
either way im glad to see u have not given up !!!

Lets see how big I can make this thread! lol

Ya Know I was trying to get that box off today....I was worried about supporting this thing?!? I cut through most of the silicone and could probably hang off of it!

This is where I am at.

After having the tank set up w/o internal overflows, I am going to have a big problem going back to them. I just keep running in circles in my head. (it's easier, it's not what I want...it's easier...it's not what I want) Deep down, I don't want them in the tank and can't see compromising this...Especially now that I have time and a choice of what I want. Granted, I don't want this to take 6 months again either! (or cost a bazillion dollars)

So, Steve....

Are you really confident that this wouldn't happen again?
I am wondering if it was that weird corner that caused the crack. (for those of you who don't know what I am talking about, it looked like the glass slipped while it was being siliconed, but it SEEMED that they had it where it wouldn't be a problem)

I can't believe I am saying this...and maybe it's all the gunpowder I inhaled tonight...But I think doing it all over is what I want to do.

These are the things running through my head right now...

A. I don't want overflows in the tank

B. A Tank with the external overflow installed already, wouldn't fit through any of my basement doors.

C. Tried this once already... We know the result!

D. Could it have been caused by the uneven corner of the tank?

E. Am I out of my freaking mind!?!?

F. Repeat.

Brian as long as the tank was level it had to be that corner.
a good example is jasons tank, we did the same thing & all went
well, he made sure it was level & it came out great & how about
Andrews tank same thickness of glass dual external overflows &
level perfect, have confidence my good man, i dint like that corner
from the first time i saw it & maybe that's why that tank was never
drilled.

My 125 cracked in pretty much the same fashion. When I cut the opening for the externals, there was a tiny little chip in the corner that stoopid me didn't even pay attention to. This was my nephew's very old 125 that was 1/2 inch glass, and had no braces. The trim was basically there only to support a canopy. The crack ran right from that tiny little chip down to the opposite corner, and just blew out. Having replaced it the next day, with a stock 125 with conventional bracing, and two hang-on overflows, I understand perfectly how you could be a little disappointed at the prospect of having a tank that's now "internally encumbered". I think it's just your choice, and if I had the time, and didn't have all that rock and livestock in buckets and containers scattered throughout the basement, I would've done it again. Yes, absolutely nuts. But I still remmber how that tank looked with no obstructions whatsoever.

But is it too to vote for the road trip to Nebraska!

Brian, Glad to see you are down but definitely not out.

"E. Am I out of my freaking mind!?!?"

We all are a wee bit, hey, we have to be to stay in this hobby/obsession.

I would do the external overflow again but I wouldn't cut the slot along the top edge. On my 125 I had 3 holes drilled 2" down from the top. I then siliconed a small glass overflow box on the inside of the tank and a larger one on the outside for the durso pipes.

hmmmm, I ordered mine from socal creations. I know they are shipping larger tanks now, but I can't tell you how much it will cost with freight shipping though.

Maybe check into a local tenecor dealer, I think seaclear is another acrylic tank maker that fish shops carry.
