Topping off with saltwater ----

Think of it this way. Instead of it being salt pretend we are adding marbles to the water. Lets make it easy and say we have a ten gallon tank and every day we add one gallon of water for evaporation.

now in that 10 gallon tank we have nine gallons of water and one gallon of marbles. a 9 to 1 ratio.

a day goes by and 1 gallon of water evaporates, not the marbles because marbles dont evaporate(like salt) leaving us with an 8 to 1 ratio.

now we need to get back to our set 9 to 1 ratio in order to keep everything healthy and consistent. So we would only need to add 1 gallon of water.

But, if you top off with the same 9 to 1 ratio as with what's in the tank you are increasing the ratio of marbles to water.

So in that day off topping of with marble water you have gone from 9 to 1 to 8.9 to 1.1. That would be increasing over time the amount of marbles in your tank and could become toxic to your fish.

After time the ratio would keep increasing 8.8/1.2 8.7/1.3 etc. but what i am saying is the salt errrrr marbles will keep increasing.

now obviously the results are allot less drastic in a tank the size of yours, but the build up is just the same.

If you are worried about dumping fresh water into your tank, look at something like this

you can set it to do a few drips a minute keeping the salinity rock steady and dossing your additives at the same time. Just don't set it too fast or you could overflow your tank. I fill up a 7 gallon beer brewers bucket once a week with water and calc and a few other additives and let it go. No daily topoffs. Just let it draw from that. I have to do seasonal changes to the flow rate because my evaporation goes way up in the summer.

Thanks alot I really appreciate it

Also, i can't remember if you said you already raised you salinity or not but if it's still at 1.023 and you want to get it up to the 1.025-1.026 range you can continue to top off with saltwater until you reach that point. When I first set my tank up the salinity was about 1.024 and I just topped off with saltwater until I got to 1.026 and then switched over to freshwater top offs. My tank is only a 40 gal so the salinity went up fast so for yours you may want to mix the salinity a bit higher to bring it up.

I think I noticed a frag of Green Star Polyps in a picture. I suggesest you move those on another smaller rock and keep an eye on it. You might think it looks cool as it spreads but before you know it you won't be alble to stop it, It grows super fast!!
I started with a small piece glued to a rock that was the size of a dime and soon it spread to many other rocks. I have controlled it now to the point that I have two small rocks sitting on the sand bed not touching any other rocks.

Ok cool thanks for the heads up can i take it out the water and super glue gel it to a rock without it dying???

Ok cool i will do so. I checked this morning it was titlting between 1.024 and 1.025

I would probably leave it in the 1.025 range until you get a refractometer or get your hydrometer calibrated with a know salinity. I had the same hydrometer that you have and when I bought a refractometer it read the same as my hydrometer. I have heard many stories though of the same hydrometer being off by .003 though which is a pretty substantial amount. My LFS will calibrate the hydrometer for $5 and I bet yours would do the same. They just test it and write how far off it is on the hydrometer.

That's what I did with mine and it is doing great. It is definitely growing fast so I may have to figure something else out for the placement of my GSP.

I guess I was lucky too as I ha the same hydrometer. It read the same as my refractometer when I got one. Could it be they are getting better and not that far off?

LOL ok Palting your in this cliq too? Dude I told yall i dont want any problems =(

:) If you look at my prior posts on this thread, Derrick, I'm actually trying to help you keep your thread open and going.

Good to see that you are listening to advice for a change, like top-off water. Keep it up, and you may still succeed! Good luck!

I hear you and thanks for the help =)

LOL I seen a monster piece at my LFS it took over there tank LOL I hope it didnt do that to you =)

It hasn't taken over my tank yet but I glued it to a piece of rock that is part of my main rockwork. It's still pretty small but it grows about an inch every couple of weeks so I may have to take that piece of rock out and seperate it from the rest of the rock.

Yea im going to petco for the 1$ per gallon sale and getting me a nice 29 maybe even a 40 gallon QT Tank If its emoty and just using live rock do you think i should do any water changes?????

Isn't petco a love hate thing? They have such great deals on tanks and such, but I never buy livestock at my local because they are always in terrible shape.

Although its true my Lunar wrasse is very reef safe he is a pain to all my inverts he has killed my sallylight foot crab today im heated I just watched him peck his legs off its not looking good for him he isnt dead yet he is still moving but i know the end is near =( and he pecks my snainls also. Im gonna try to get the wrasse out of there but i dont think ill have any luck =(

thats why they are not reef safe, same with the trigger, it will do the samething, and there is a good chance he will nip at your coral.

KLOL believe it or not I was a department manager there last year. They are so retarted they know jack about saltwater LOL Maybe thats where i picked up most of my bad habits..........:hmm4: hell maybe thats where i picked all of them up from LOL =)

Trigger is fine he is ver very peaceful wrasse now that isthe devil LOL

triggers as a whole are not reef safe. Just be warned and know that he can, and will anytime he want, start munching on corals, snails, crabs, or hermit crabs.

blue jaws are "more" reef safe than others, but there are no guarantees. These are wild animals.
