250 gallon build thread

The mirror is a nice touch! I must say though.... it is starting to look like a strip joint down there, mirrors, poles, big couches...... lol :D

Added Sailfin Tang, Scopas Tang and Gold Stripe Maroon on 11/29/2010.

Fellow club member was tearing down a tank and just wanted them gone, I was happy to give them a home.

Flame Angel and Lawnmower Blenny are in QT and may be moving to the big tank soon. I will put the added time stamp up when they move in.

Flame Angel, Lawnmower Blenny added 12/3/2010.

Will post a new vid soon.

the flame added a brilliant splash of color to the tank. I have a lot of blues and yellows on my fish, so the bright orange just really stands out.

I am not sure if I have ever mentioned it, but there is ich in my display. I have always gotten well acclimated, good eating fish and they rarely even show the signs of ich, although I know they have it, they are just resistant to it. In fact, my PBT was the only fish I have ever lost to ich in that aquarium, it is a fish I love, but I know I cannot have because this fish was mega healthy when I got it, and could not fight it off. Anyway, I have been thinking about removing the rock racks under the reef for sometime. I been seeing these minimalist aquascapes and I love them. Well my new emperor, who is eating great is having issues kicking the ich. So I need to pull him for treatment anyway. So I did it, I tore the reef apart, caught him and put it back together, pulled a bunch more sand out until I could no longer see what I was doing. I will have to siphon the rest out. It looks really cool. Today it should be clear enough to get a vid. I will try to post it later on tonight. As far as the Emp, he will go through a full cycle of cupramine, after that, I am not sure what. I will probably use the water from the display for changes as usual, then see how he reacts to the ich. I just need to get him to become resistant to it, since he was stuggling, I will help him with some copper. We will see, I hate to treat him, then have to sell him, but I may have to. Who knows.

Anyway, just a little update. TTYL

I like the new layout better.

Keep in mind that if you dont add fish for a long (12 months or longer) your fish will eventually become completely resistant to the ich parasite that is in your tank. Awhile after that, the ich will be pretty much gone from your system. I have personal experiance with this, and I've seen it discussed over on another forum you and I are members on.

I would try and avoid treating with copper and instead look at going with hyposalinity. Its easier on the fish. I use a Kalk drip container filled with RO and a small amount of sodium bicarbonate. The RO drip maintains salinity at the levels I want/need for the hypo to kill off parasites, and the sodium bicarb, (baking soda that has been baked in the oven at 200 F for 2 hours) keeps the pH of the hospital tank at a steady level. Sodioum Bicarb is a strong pH adjuster so a little goes a long way. I've found that using a pH monitor helps me keep and eye on the pH for the hospital tank.

Keep in mind that when you re-introduce the Emporer to your tank, it will come back down with Ich again.

Hey Nick! Thanks for all the comments.

Although I definately agree the fish become resistant to the effects that ich normally has, they still are able to host the ich enough to sustain its existance in the tank. It is my belief, as long as ich has been in the display, and you keep fish in it, its life cycle continues regardless of whether your fish show signs or not. One easy way to prove this is to test your theory would be to not add a fish for a year, then run a PBT through full QT, and add it to the display. If ich is still present, which I believe it would be, the PBT would definately get it. They have nearly 0 resistance to ich. However, I dont see myself testing this anytime soon, I love trying new fish too much!!!

I do not treat with copper, I should have said it was cupramine. I have had great luck with it, and I am not a fan of hypo. Hypo is a very high maintenance type of qt treatment, I am all about low maint, just see my water change system, LOL.

I also understand that the Emperor will get ich again, this time he was eating well, but having a tough time fighting it, I pulled him before it got too bad. I do understand I may have to face the tough decition of selling him. I really do not want to.

I hear you...just saw some ich spots on my PB tang....not many, but I havent had it in my current system, and the fish was in QT for 2 months with no issues.

I'll be moving him back to QT til its gone and will be moving the Purple Tang to the other tank as I think it may be a source of stress...

Just need to lure the fish into the trap...

I highly doubt I will ever try a PBT again. I bought one from an established aquarium, he was fat and ate like a horse. He lasted 6 weeks or so, never could fight the ich off. I have lost others in previous tanks the same way. Just one of those fish I love, that I cant have because of ich. Only exception is if some one who was certain thier tank had ich, and they actually had one that developed an immunity.
