270 Gallon SPS tank for JBNY

Joe - What's your experience with Starfire glass and it scratching compared to standard glass? I'm looking at upgrading from my 180 to something larger and was quoted on some 3/4 glass.

I was told by a friend that Starfire scratches much easier than standard glass and that I should think about not using a magnet to clean it if I go with the starfire.

Thanks!

Joe - I've looked at those pocket jigs quite a few times in the past. I was gonna use them like you did the next time I build a stand. They are super slick and make a clean strong product.

WOW that stand looks BEEFY. What skin you putting on it? Oak? Maple? Etc?

 Cats get themselves into trouble a lot.

Hey got to looking at the pics. Why not full brace in the center? It looks like it is only on the front half of the stand? don't you worry about the back being not braced enough?

Thanks for the kind words guys, my carpentry skill still need a lot of work but I'm much better than I was a few years ago. Most of the learning and tools came from realizing, during renovations, that by doing it myself and buying the the tools I needed it still came out cheaper than hiring someone to do the work for me, and I get to keep the tools.

terranova Hi Liana, I'll do another tank tour as soon as everything is up and has some time to settle in. This time I'll make sure I am better prepared for 50 people coming to my house to look at a fish tank! :)

ReefBum, Lunchbucket, tony13 Yeah the vent cover over the hole was brilliant, when the floor guy told me that I was like "duh, why didnt I think of that?!!"

MIKE NY Thanks. I like the plywood too, it makes the box less imposing that having a bunch of 4x4 under the tank.

Hey Chris,

Personally I don't have any experience with it. I know a few people who do have it on their tanks though. no one with it has ever commented that they were having problems scratching it so I not too worried. I'm pretty careful with my tank anyway, my last tank was up from 5 years, and I never noticed a scratch on it the whole time I had it. I don't think a magnet with those nylon scrubbers is going to cause a problem though. But I'll ask Aquarium Obsessed what they think just to be safe.

The jig is really nice, super easy to use and make assemble very easy. My wife bought it for me months ago and I never used it till now. But I will use it more often now that I am familiar with how they work.

I'm thinking of skinning it with birch that will be stained. It will be a light color, I haven't quite picked out the color yet. There will be accents of wenge (which is that really dark almost black color that you see now) on the top and bottom of the stand. Hopefully it will look cool.

Man, my cat is way too curious for her own good. Now she has become accustom to me working on things around the house, and will stick her nose in everything I am working on or just sit down next to me and watch me work. She still runs like hell from the vacuum cleaner, but if I am working on a project all my power tools don't phase her at all, really weird. I had a compressor going the other day and she stayed right next to me the whole time.

I am going to put a center brace on the back. I couldn't run the middle section all the way back because of the hole in the floor, but I will add another beam and attach it to the back. For some reason I left it off of my cutting sheet, so when I was breaking down all the wood I never cut that piece. It should go on today or tomorrow.

Yesterday I didn't seem to get a whole lot accomplished. Although I spent like two hours, all got was the top supports fastened to the stand as well as the back legs done. I still need to put in the back middle cross support that Lunchbucket asked about. Hopefully get that done tomorrow.

Tonight I plan to cut the top for the stand and if I have time play around with some edge banding for the plywood.

So here is the stand as of last night, now at least everything is screwed together. It's pretty solid, I'm planing on putting a piece of 1/2" ply across the back to keep the stand rigid, but even without it the stand doesn't twist or rock at all.

and a pic of me playing with top supports that my wife took to help document the moment. :) But it does help give a sense of scale to the stand.

Either that stand is HUGE or you are a tiny guy :D

Birch sounds nice. Accents will look great too

I'm 5'11" the stand is going to be big, the footprint is only about 2" more than the tank 72"x36", but it going to be a little over 3' tall. My old stand was only 27" and I hated that it was not taller.

Hey I am looking at foam to put under the tank. I would really like to have the look of the tank sitting on top of the stand with no edging or molding around it, so that would mean the foam would be showing. So I'm trying to find a thinner foam that the 1/4-1/2 sheets they sell at HD, also in a color not pink or white.

I'm thinking of trying to find a 1/8" sheet of foam. I think I can find it in black in either neoprene and polyethylene. Anyone have any experience with using foam at this thickness? Is neoprene fine to use? The tank will be sitting on two 3/4 sheets of ply so I think the top will be pretty flat to begin with.

Since you watched the show you know the required finish right?...........Togue oil of course!
How were you going to finish the top edge of the plywood? Is the top going to overlap the sides?

Yeah but I'm not going to use real wenge. I'm going to use red oak and give it an ebony stain, much easier. and less expensive than real wenge. :)

Don't understand your question.

looking good, glas to see it finally coming along...I agree with the stand Height, I wish mine was like 42" at least, since im 6'2 and my current one is like 30" or so

You're going to skin the face of the plywood with Birch, but how are you going to finish the exposed edges? Edge banding? Or is the top of the stand going to overlap the sides, therefore covering the top edges of the ply? If it's the latter I was thinking you could route a void into the top, the exact size of the tank, to put the foam into.

OK I understand. I'm going to use edge banding. I toyed with different ideas for the look I'm going for, I think edge banding will have to do. I played around with the edge banding for a while last night and I think it will come out good.

Here is a better way of seeing what I am tying to do with the stand.
So here is the plan I drew up.

Stand_V2.JPG

And here is a picture if where I got the idea from. The bottom right section is what I am basing it on. This is the furniture we have in our office. I'll only have one top drawer that spans the whole length, and two large drawers below. The bottom plinth will not stick out though. I felt that I would ruin it over time by spilling water and bumping into it with my feet while working on the tank.

DSCN1875.jpg

I am going to use a light stain on the sides and drawer fronts though, rather than a solid color like I have here. But I will use the wenge color on the top and bottom like in the picture.
