Hey, does anyone have experience with staining?

I'm trying to get a uniform stain on this red oak veneer. I tried a bunch a different satins and it seems I still can't get it as dark or as uniform as I would like it. I am thinking that I might try using a glaze as well to help out. Any thoughts from anyone?

Here is a pic of the sample board I made. It is using Olympic oil stains, three coats. I tried using different combos of a red mahogany satin and a deep ebony to get the look I am trying for. After the stain I put a sanding sealer on it and 3 top coats of poly acrylic. It looks pretty good but I'm still not happy with it.

This is what I've got.

happy B-Day Joe!:celeb2:

The tank looks great so far .

I don;t have too much experience with stain, what i do know is uniform is not easy with the harder woods. sorry but no tips there. Don't stress the un-eveness though, that is some of the charm of wood .

Try and drop me a note what time you move the tank upstairs , so far the 24th seems open for extra muscle if you need it .

Thanks Joe I'll shoot you an email, so far it still looks good for that day.

Anyway I think I got the stain more uniform now. I did another sample using shellac cut down with thinner. I used that as a base coat and stained from there. Looks to be much better. It takes about 3 days to do another sample board. So if this one comes out good. I should be ready to start staining and laying down some poly this weekend, and have it finished by Mon-Tues.

Hey Joe, for the stains I would mix them until you get the color your after and then do 3 coats of the same mix rather than layering them up, that will make things far more uniform especially with oil based stains. HTH

tagging onto the thread. your last tank was amazing and i'm excited to see this one develop! once it's set up, could i stop by to look at it? :D

That worked out much better. I did two coats with a mix and it came out great. I'll post some shots later.

hey Joe, everything is looking great. I myself am building a stand as well for my new 220. Do you think you could explain how you are staining your stand? I can't wait to see everything come together for you.

kigs You are welcome to stop over and see it whenever you want. If you are a member of LIRA, I generally do a tank tour for the whole club too.

Thanks.

Here is what I did.

Sand it first, 100 then 150 then 220 grits.

Base coat of 1 oz. shellac to 1 quart thinner. Apply a lite coat with a foam brush, let that sit at least 2 hours.

I used Olympic oil bases stains. I mixed Ebony and Red Mahogany. I uses two small cans of ebony and one third of a small can of red mahogany. Mix them up in a separate container.

Spread the stain with a foam brush.

First coat let it sit for 7 minutes then wipe off with cotton cloths.
Let dry for 5 hours.
Second coat let it sit for 12 minutes then wiped off with cotton cloths.

let dry over night.

Put down a coat of sanding filler. I used Olympic water based sanding filler. Spread with a foam brush, let sit for 2 hours.

Sand 220 grit.

3 coats Miniwax Poly acrylic with a foam brush. Let it sit for two hours then sand 220, then 320 between coats. Don't sand the final coat. ;)

Let dry 24 hours before moving.

It came out great. Much, much better than the last time I stained my stand. I wanted a very dark color and I think the long stain time with using the shellac under the stain helped it to come out more uniform. The finish looks great, no brush marks can be seen on the finish at all, it came out really well. Even with the veneering it still looks pretty good.

Here are some pictures of when I put the veneering on the edges of the plywood before it was stained.

And here are a few shots of the final finish. It came out much, much lighter in the picture due to the flash. It's at least 3 shades darker in person. I'll get a better shot when it is upstairs on the stand and I can use natural sunlight for the picture rather than the flash.

Staining and finishing took me the whole weekend and last night.

Is that a satin finish?

My biggest complaint with my own stuff is that the urethane looks runny or has brush strokes. If I could avoid that, I'd be much happier.
