Tested the equipment in r/o water to find out that skimmers don't work in freshwater

Here's the tank in freshwater.

.

After it snowed Reef Crystals.
100_4919.jpg

Powerhead is a Koralia 2
Heater is Visitherm Stealth 150watt
Skimmer is CPR Dual BakPak

Will add sand/rock after equipment is sorted. Skimmer is still rackety/noisey. Will do vinegar bath on the pumps. Right now sg sitting at 1.020 after 12 cups of Reef Crystals.

Looks like a good start. I love my 29g reef tank. It's a very nice size tank for a nano reef tank. Are you going with a reef tank or fowlr?

Eventually reef. Not right at the start though. That's why I'm going to keep my sg high.

What stocking do you have in your tank?

Well I decided to go ahead and clean a bag of sand and put it in. I'll just have to push the base rocks right down to the glass. That's why I'm only doing one bag right now.

I couldn't believe how dirty/dusty the minimal rinse bag turned out to be. It was insane  Here's some photos to show how dirty it really was.

First poured in. Filled the bowl about 1/4 - 1/3 full.

After I filled the bowl with water and swished a time or two.

After 5 rinses

After 10 rinses and it's still a bit cloudy.

After it's added to the tank it's STILL CLOUDY :o

Oh my God, I almost forgot.

I DROPPED THE LIGHT BAR INTO THE TANK!!!! by accident. I reached to grab it quick and received a little zap. At that point I started swearing like a drunken sailor (no offense to my Navy sister) and my hubby came running. I NEVER swear, except during my bowling league so he knew something was wrong. We unplugged everything and pulled the light out. At least it was just the cheap light that came w/the tank originally. He thinks it may work again after it dries out. It was still partially lit in the tank.

What an experience!!!

Uhmm, so you know you're not supposed to put the lights into the water right? Oh well, sounds like a lighting upgrade is coming soon, yay!!

As for my stocking in my 29g there is really too much to list. It's been up since last June and has 2 occy clown, a lawnmower blenny, a green bubble tipped anemone and a ton of corals. I've got a tank thread on here somewhere with a few pics. There is a more in depth thread on that other site dedicated to nano reef tanks. I'd post a link to it, but they from on that on this site. My user name is the same over there if you figure out which site I'm talking about.

Looks like your off to a good start I also have a 29 gal and love it makes a great nano

Also IVe added a few things and the pics if you click the red house are a coouple months old but check em out
good luck to ya

Kel-looks good. What kind of lighting are you running? I'm thinking of a clip on 150w halide. Can't build a canopy since my tank is sitting on the bottom shelf of a big stand.

Chaze-know what forum you're referring to...I think. Will check it out.

Fish. I think I want a ywg/pistol shrimp pair and a blue spotted jawfish for sure. I'll also get a pair of picasso percula's.

Im running an orbit Power compact 130 watts seems to be plenty for my tank im keeping mainly LPS and everything has great growth and good color...I need to take more updated shots of course my camera doesnt do the job so I need to borrow a buddies, soon though

I'm about to upgrade my camera. It's a 5 year old 4 megapixel point and shoot kodack...lol

NEEDS upgrading :)

Chazde3-found your thread. Really cool. Know what you mean about controlling spending. We have 3 kids, 2 dogs, 1 cat and a household that's a priority(before tanks). I may have to look into finding other reef clubs around me that may have more to sell. I love acans, brains and stuff but there doesn't seem to be many around me.

First things first I need to get some rock and a few inverts/fish to make sure I can keep them alive first

Guys/gals I'm a little paranoid about buying some lr. Will be getting some next Sunday as that's when my friend is available to do it. I don't want it to look like a giant blob of rock and am nervous about drilling it and putting "rods" or whatever in it.

Any tips or places that I can read about creating an aquascape?

Thanks all,
Kj

Well...I'm thinking about drilling anyway. Kind of scares me though. Any advice on it? I'd be using cycled live rock. Any tips. Don't wanna kill my live rock  I'm also thinking about doing a pillar. I'd like frogspawn and have read about keeping them several inches away from other corals and a pillar seems to be the perfect spot...I think.

Any advice on drilling and what type of "rods" to use?

Thanks :)

Pic w/lights on it. Had build up issues on the waters surface so I pointed my ph up since this pic was taken.

My stats are all good.

0 ammonia
0 nitrIte
5-10 nitrAte
sg 1.024-1.025
ph 8.0 - 8.2

So now it's time to add something.

added 3 astrea snails so far.

How long should I wait to add a pistol shrimp and goby? Or should it be ok to do it now?

:)

Messed w/my rocks today. I added a few. Hopefully it doesn't cycle again.

What you think? As long as it doesn't cycle would you say its ok to add a shrimp/goby pair?

My tank didn't cycle again (from adding the new rocks) and I'm going to look for a ywg/shrimp pair or a Yasha/Randalli shrimp pair. Depending on what I find. Will be traveling to a larger metropolitan area this weekend and am hopeful.

? When the heck am I supposed to be getting a diatom/aglae bloom. Been cycled for 11 days now and no bloom yet....
