no. I had the bakpak skimmer hanging on the tank but not operating(with the pre-skimmer) and the starfish climbed in the preskimmer box. My top off ran out while I was away. I should've checked the sg in the preskimmer box when I got back, but I didn't. I don't think the couple tiny screw holes would have been enough for circulation and the water evaporated below the level of the top of the box
