2Tall 185g - Build

My water quality just improved!

Stopped by SpectraPure today and got a new MaxCap 90GPD (MC-RODI-MF) system. My previous RODI was a pieced together 5 stage system that burned through DI resin like crazy, I was not using SP products, but will from now now! This system is normally $379 but is now $289 and a great buy at that!
I will talk to AZDesert Rat about fine tuning to get the most from this system.

I am also making a portable water change system that will be mounted on a cart.
I currently rent my home, so drilling holes and running tubing through the walls/attic won't work and water changes in the 185 has been a major PITA! This WC Cart will make it much easier and encourage me to do it more. I will of course post pics of this project as I go.

I have my Spectrapure refurbed 90gpd unit connected to a 2x4 that is temporarily installed to the wall in the laundry room with the feed coming off of the "Y" cold water feed to the washing machine and the waste line going to the washing machine drain. This is all going to a 44 gal Brute garbage can on a Rubbermaid dolly which I also use to mix salt water.

When its time to do a WC I roll the can to the tank ( I kinda look like a janitor pushing the garbage can but it works). I am lucky in this part of the house it is all tile flooring and all the same level.

Hows your water pressure? Here in GC I am only getting 35 PSI and had to get a booster pump, I now run the pump so I have 100PSI at the membrane, It also helps to soften the water before the RO/DI, sodium is easier on the membrane

Running more pressure will make the filter more efficient

This is how I set mine up to my water supply

Ran the waist line through the wall to the laundry drain, I'm in a rental home also
Just need some white caulking to fill hole when you move out two mints and no more hole

Bugs, great photos. You are going to love being able to make your own RO/DI water. I used to hate dragging those 5 gallon jugs to the LFS.

My buddy lives in GC and has low pressure like you. Here, pressure seems very good, I will see exactly how good when I hook this up. I've been fighting that flu plague the last 1.5 weeks and STILL feel like *#&%! Maybe Sunday I will feel like hooking this up. I currently do the same janitor thing you do :lol2: looking to further streamline the process with a portable cart with.

Thanks for the pics Ni, that is probably how I will hook it up. My old system is ran off a garden hose and is probably why I burn through DI so fast.

Jeff, thanks for the pics comment! When I get a better lens, you will have to show me how you get such great pics! Aquarium photography is quit the different animal. I finished your algae scraper and we will have to hook up next week so I can also see your tall tank.

Awesome build and lots of info can I just hire you Bugs to come setup my cube ? Lol Jk

Thanks!
I don't think anyone has enough $$ to pay me to do another build like this one...:lol2:
With all else said, I love this tank and it has been worth every dollar and every hour spent on it.
Tall tanks display like none others and IMO are worth the PITA!

Good luck with your tallboy!

Nice build, I saw that you said you had an explosion of calcified green algae and coraline growth. The urchin can also be helping spread the spores. I have one too and noticed a big increase in their growth as it gets bigger. It came in on my live rock about 1/4" and its growing like a weed. They are totally worth the extra scraping if you ask me.

^Thanks!
Yeah, urchins are way cool and not as destructive as tubo snails... Much of the green coralline that started growing on the black sides is starting to turn purple. I'm working diffidently daily to keep the fronts clean so it doesn't get a chance to take hold.

Hooked up my new MaxCap tonight with 410 TDS tap, coming out of the RO is only 8!
Final TDS after DI is 0.1 and I'm sure that will drop to 0.0 after it get 10-30 gallons through it. My previous system would never go below 0.8 and then not last long. My water pressure is a nice 80 PSI.
I think much of my problem was the 20' rubber garden hose I used AND inferior cartridges/resins! This is yet ANOTHER one of those things I wish I would have got quality from the beginning!

I have 40g of saltwater mixed up and 30g RODI from the old water system which I'm just going to dump and be done with it. I believe my PO4 problems is directly related to that old system and the rubber hose as the PO4 was high. I will test it again with the new water tomorrow. BTW, the hookup water comes directly from the water line now, no rubber.

move to Flagstaff, 150 ppm out of the tap! Reef fish love snow melt! I use so little resin/filters, I forget i have a RODI.. Bugs, is it just the photos or do the reds show up really nice under your LED mix?

The red really glows with my LED's, but I do had 4 Red/Orange that run in the day and 2 that are a part of my moon lights. What really seems to make the reds pop is the UV violets that are in the day lineup.

150ppm... your filters/DI must last for ever!
I though Phoenix water was bad until I moved to the East side, the taste here is terrible! My old RODI system is now dedicated to home drinking water as it does make good drinking water.

Ya, after moving up here I can't drink phx tap water.. Does you urchin do any damage to your tank, as far as munching silicone, scratching glass/acrylic? Would love to get one but I want to keep this tank in good shape..

I retrofitted a Kraft deli door product holder into an intank frag rack. The bottom has a grade and the top is open, so it gets good flow. It will also keep snails out if I place the top lip above the surface. It is held firm by four suction cups. :)
