$3,700 Angelfish..

Maybe I missed a post, but what kind of angel was it? I have seen many fish in this price range, peppermint angels come to mind, they are only rare because they come from more then 350 ft and it is expensive and dangerous to collect, but people who go that deep collect between 6-10 per trip, not a rare fish, just very hard to get. Same is true for genacanthus personatus from HI, only place where they are found reletively common it is not legal to collect them, other places 200-300 feet to find them. But again, not that rare of a fish. Other fish I've seen worth money like that are hybrids, mostly angels, which usually are infertile as the definition of a sp is they have to produce fertile offspring or they are just color varieties of the same sp, look at the debate on hamlets most experts can't agree because they breed in the wild producing 3 "types" of babies, 2 sets look like one or the other adult and a 3rd that is a perfect mix between the adults. and all will inbreed with eachother and all young produced are fertile.
Also, most people willing to spend that much on a single fish usually know what they are doing, most CEO's just want something pretty not super expensive. Fish like that go to Japan where the fish is very well taken care of.

HAHA, sorry, forgot the link http://www.liveaquaria.com/diversden/ItemDisplay.cfm?ddid=29136&siteid=20. Im not trying to say that some rich CEO wont be able to take care of the fish, you dont have to be an "expert" to take care of most rare fish. As you said, some times they are called rare because of where they are found, or how deep they are, but can still be semi easy fish to care for. I just think that a 3,700 dollar angel best be left for a breeding facility of some sort so it could be studied or bred or other something productive. Not posted on a large wholesale website so some average joe can buy it, regardless of what side of the globe they live on. JMO :D

I couldn't find item as well.

Bobbyblank, again without the fish, I can't say, but my first post still makes a point, if it is a hybrid, one of a kind, no breeder or researcher wants it, scientists will preserve it dead and if you leave it alone, no one else will ever see it, maybe that is ok, but I think it should be shared. If it is that it comes from so deep, it is not a rare fish in the wild, but expensive to collect and the people who do should be payed the most money possible for risking their lives to get it, and when they go that deep they are risking their lives it is very dangerous.

Sorry, terrible time getting the link up, but its good now :).

Its a Chaetodontoplus conspicillatus. Found in 30-40 meters. Only found on the southern part of the Great Barrier Reef.

$3700 for a conspicuous angel? WTH? That thing better contain gold coins. I've seen them for MUCH less, although it's been a while since i've even looked/glanced for one. Are they really that expensive now?

That is an inflated price, last summer in FL they were between $350.00 and $650 depending on size at LFS. In LA wholesaler sm were $300. Maybe price is up because of season, but that is not normal price.

If you have any industry exeprience you will note the size of the fish and how rare that is :). I have NEVER seen one that small offerred in the US(usually double that size). They're going for more due to seaon as noted. It is pricy, but Kevin moves every single pricy fish he posts, regardless of price. You may not pay it, but there is for sure a buyer out there that will. As for leaving it in the wild, the same could be said about everything we import for our tanks. Why does a high $$$ amount make it any less suitable for aquaria or for experts only? It's a very tough fish BTW :)

So the shiiping is less because of the size of the fish,that does not seem to make since why this is so expensive.Sure it is small now but it will grow!!!!!That price is crazy for that fish!!!!It is not even a Clarion Angel!!!Good luck,Hey I have a 1.5 inch niger from africa I will sell it for $3500.00 LOL

smaller = $$$?

smaller = $$$?

I always thought the larger the fish the more valuable. I don't understand why the value of this fish would be greater because of its size.

Maybe this is a VERY slow grower so finding one this small means it will live 5 years longer in captivity?

Anyone have any thoughts?

As long as the fish isn't a threatened sp, I think its awesome someone can sell a fish for so much. I would expect a fish that demands such a high value is cared for vary well in capture and transport (at least I would hope it is).

Nope, neither is the $10K price tag on Saint Pauls Rock angels or Peppermint angels :)

Like everything, there is a high end 99% of us never see or buy :)

Wow... Peppermint Angels go for 10K??

It would be cheaper to fly where they are exported from, catch as many as you can and ship them back yourself!!! Or pay a local diver 1k to do it for you!!!

You'd get some nice fish, and a vacation to boot!

But G is right. There is a very high end in all things that most consumers never know about. It isn't anything bad. If anything, it should you drive you to work harder so that you fit into that part of the population that can afford those things... At least, thats how I see it :D

I live and dive in FL and I've collected st pauls angel color forms, but because they didn't come from st Pauls they aren't worth very much money, BTW for those of you who don't know a St Pauls angel is just a queen but because of isolation they have several wierd color patterns, one is koi colored (which I've never see there is a photo in H. Debeluise fish for invert aquarium.) but in south FL there are blue and gold that are indistinguishable from St Pauls blue or gold. There is an adult male that lives in a place called Horse shoe that is solid gold with only a crown, no other color, and the gold is GOLD. I have a friend who has photographed it, I'll try to find photo if there is interest, but it is a full adult so not legal to collect, FL has 8 inch max on angels.

The price tag on the equipment needed to dive to 300 feet and catch one would set you back a pretty penny... :D
