3 tank,2600 gal. system room build

tank size is decided, overflow decided, just need to decide cl holes or not then i can order tank and sort out the rest later. tank builder says tempered bottom and holes are no problem, garrentee 5 years either way. if i have holes drilled, i could cap them off and try thunze first, if i needed more flow later, holes for cl will be there.

I'm sorry, but I missed some where along the line what the dimensions of the tank are that you have decided upon?

trying to lure out a mantis shrimp. hes green and blue about1-1/2'' long. got a raw shrimp in for bait?

Put that rock on a platform made of eggcrate (lighting diffuser), and put the bait in the corner of the tank. That way he has to exit and crawl over to the food.

Once he's out of the rock, lift the rock out of the tank. Now you can take your time capturing the mantis with a net.

For you reef tank I would suggest ( as others may have already ) using at least an Ocean Motion 8 way on that tank which would require 9 holes ( 1 intake and 8 returns ). That is a large tank and the easiest way to get good flow is with some sort of closed loop and large ( 5000 gph + ) pump to run the OM. Dont worry , the bulkhead seals wont leak, and just put a little silicone on the gasket when you instal them and tighten them hand tight plus a little ...

I know of many reefers who use aqaurium safe silicone on gaskets for years..I recommend you use it especially on bulkheads that are in the bottom of the tank..

I'm with Chad here- NO silicone. It will lube the gasket and its too easy to squish it out. UNLESS its an AGE tank with routed out bottom plate for large Hayward Hex head bulkheads, in which case I use a good dose of DC795:D
I do put a good dose on after the BH is tight though.

I have worked on those large Dresser FRP pumps quite a bit. Ours were IIRC 25HP and 2000GPM.

I would skip the RK2 skimmers. Too many watts for the skimming you get. Get a bank of ATBs and get better skimming for less watts & better technology.

I'm a huge fan of OMs and closed loops. Theres no reason you cant put all the plumbing down from the top and hide it with rockwork- no penetrations.

You have to be able to get powerheads out to service them, and hiding them with rockwork makes that a royal pain, IMO.

I think waveboxes are garbage too. There I said it:D
I have never seen one make the tank look natural (too fast), and they do really nothing as far as "real" flow. They simply rock the tank back and forth an inch or two. I would much rather have real port to port flow across the tank. Just my opinion.

My all time favorite though is still the ball valve surge. When I finish my upgrade, it will use a ball valve surge feeding through an OM 4way:)

Yep, it just squishes the gasket out when you tighten it. I have seen where people put on silicone then barely tighten them. Then after curing they bear down the rest of the way. I just do it my way and have had good experiences for years.

H20ENG:  Posted at the same time...So glad you spoke up about the RK2...I have heard that but since never having owned one, I didn't want to mouth off.

BTW, "waveboxes" don't have to be used to make waves, dammit. Picture an external wavebox with an overflow comb...slow speed, closed loop, fast speed, reef crest.

There are other issues too, especially when mixing silicone with plastic substrates. Plastics exude oils so teh bond with silicone is usually short-lived and you can end up with a blowout. Plus, rubber gaskets can react to various chemicals. It's best just to follow instructions. :D

Thanks John,
I just cant get into them- so much hype and I just havent seen the light. I guess I'm just a hard headed old schooler:hammer:

Quite the opposite. It's the hard-headed old schooler that wants to burn a couple thousand watts to skim a tank. I wouldn't buy one just for that reason, nevermind the price tag. Remember, my skimmer runs @ 105W.

Oh, I'm all about the low watt / high yield skimmer:)

Its the wavebox I'm not sold on. Remember, I've built a lot of big surges, so maybe I'm biased:D

I am looking though, at putting a VFD on a 1HP 2000gpm prop pump for a large institution.

Seary, Hope we're not stepping on your thread. It IS relevant to large tanks and system decisions. I'm glad to see you asking and taking all suggestions seriously.
