30 minute max. acclimation rule, I'm confused.

With all the videos and info from people that use the drip line/bucket method for an hour or more, I'm confused as to when the 30 minute rule applies.
I have read the stickies and I'm still confused.

I always thought the bucket/drip was a good method and the longer the better.

Now I read not because of ammonia build up.

Help needed to understand how and when this 30 minute rule applies, please. thanks:)

It depends on the situation. When I pick fish up from my lfs, the water matches mine in salinity and pH. So I go pretty fast, just temperature and dump a little of my water into the bag a cople of times to make sure. If you are going to have to make a big salinity swing, then you have to do that slow. That's the advantage of making the QT match the fish store ahead of time. It can also depend on the hardiness of the fish and how long it's been in the bag. Each situation can present it's own challenges to acclimating a fish.

Depends on the species really I think.

Some species get a few hours (linkia) some get a few minutes (most fish), it all depends.

I was corrected in an earlier post on this.

Fish that have been shipped and have spent the better part of a couple of days or more in a bag are much more likely to have the amonia spike when you open the bag and thusly should be moved into your QT as soon as possible.

Fish you picked up from the LFS and have been in the bag for 30-60 minutes have had less time to build up nasties in the bag and you can spend a bit more time with acclimation.

I also agree. But on a related note, I always want to know the SG of shipping water so I can match it. Some online companies ship at 1.019 (saving salt, I suppose); makes acclimation more difficult.
