32 Gallon Brute Trash Cans and phosphates

I remember someone saying one of these types of trash cans leak phosphates into the water. Is the Brute the one they are talking about and has this been proven or just rumor?

I read somewhere along the lines that the Grey Brute cans Leak Phos but- If you have the White or Yellow Brutes that are USDA approved which I can't tell the difference don't leak Phos.... But I also read that they all work the same and don't leak anything

Lot's of conflicting info out there! I'm reading the thread Jeff linked and so far by page 2 it looks like Brute cans are worse than anthrax. I'm not sure I'm buying it but it's giving me second doubts for sure.

I used the Brutes but found (over time) brown 'scum'-like stuff developing. Empty the can and the sides felt slimy. Switched to using an extra fish tank i have as the storage tank.

Are you using Reef Crystals? Could be the salt brand you use and not the container. I always get that brown slime but it's never affected my tank and I've used Reef Crystals since I started in the hobby.

Looks like I'll pull the trigger on the Brutes tomorrow.

I'm sure there is no correlation Pat but try out some good salt and see what it does for your corals ;). I just switched from Tropic Marin Pro to Tropic Marin Bio-Actif.

that brown scum is usually from the salt mix used, not from the Brute...I've used the standard grey brute cans for 4+ years, no issues.

Did the switch do anything for you Jeff ??? I saw zero difference and plan on going to the normal TM salt after nothing happening with the bio-actif.....

I just started using it today. I filled my new tank up with 50/50 Bio-Actif/Pro. I just went off the reviews when I decided to go with it. I wont be able to give a good review of it myself since everything has changed in my setup.

I've had good luck with Reef Crystals for 6 years now, I won't change. The only way I nuke my tank is when I put on the dummy hat.

I switched from CoraLife to D+D H2O. I like this stuff just fine. I use the gray/green 35gal brute container with no side effects. I'd actually like a bit more phosphates in my water if you know what I mean (my pods eat my macros faster than I can grow it to export or feed the fish)
