4' X 4' tank

Did you use pressure treated lumber?

No that would be a very bad idea because the two chemicals used to PT wood, arsenic and copper, are both deadly to invertebrates so if any some how found its way into the tank than its over. There is no way that this will rot anyways.

There must have been a storm off of the coast because there were tons of mangroves washed ashore on lake worth beach, many that were rooted and had leaves also. I collected them from the seaweed and have them in my DTs sump for now. I am going to use them in my 50 gallon Rubbermaid sump when the tank is up in a few days.

I just installed the exhaust fan in the attic. It was not easy with only a 2' high area to work in. I need to wire it up and run a 4' run of 3.5" x 10" duct and I will be done. All that will be left to do is fill the tank and stock it. I will most likely start to fill it Wednesday.

I have some small peices of dead acro (alot of them). I think I am going to glue them to the skull like hair and seed the skull with alot of superman monti. It will be an awesome effect. btw the skull is made from ceramics if anyone was wondering.

No. Its actually a boat I threw together so that I can get off this desert Island Ive been stuck on. Once I make it back to land I will show you my real tank.

The tank is filled and running. Overall everything is good. I need to work out a few kinks. My return pump (dart) is running hot which I think might be cavitation. I am going to try to reconfigure the intake so it is a strait shot without the "dog leg" fitting. One of my GFIs is tripping also so I need to check that out.

Check the impeller. Sometimes even the smallest debris in there can make it heat up. Dont ask me why, but if the sump level gets too low it also heats up. I had a dart in almost the same position on a 150 gal rubbermaid and it would heat up when dirty or the water level was too low. Does yours shut down, or just feel hot? Make sure the fan clean and is turning freely. Mine got a piece of eggcrate stuck in it once.

I don't think it has anything stuck in it. It turns freely and is not loud. It actually moves alot of water when wide open or dialed back at the return. It feels hot but not so hot that I cannot keep my hand on the motor. It also seems to be pulling about 20 watts more than it should on the killawatt metter.

Throttleing it back may be the cause. Increasing the number of outputs or the size of the outputs keeps the same gph, but much les velocity.

Its hot even when not throttled back. I left Reeflo a message. Lets see what they say.

The good news is that the tank is stable at 80 degree with no chiller, heater, or fan. The lights don't raise the temp significantly either, maybe one degree. The Exhaust fan I installed in the garage is working out great. I run it nonstop (it uses one amp). All the mangroves that are in the sump are rooted and should start putting out leafs soon. They will make a great refugium.

Here are some quick pics I snapped. I will get better ones later.

mangroves

hey great thread!!! i was just gonna say that there are some serious maintnece when you have mangroves...such as the mg they take up...you should be testing this and manage accordingly...also they expel salt from thier leaves and need to be squirted with a fresh water mist about every day or they willdie and fall off... and watch for the leaves that fall off as they will raise your nutrients and that could suck really bad for a prop tank... looks great though good job!!!
